TetraPower 970MP (CANCELED) Project
XENin category Operating Systems
proposed by PurpleAlien on 19th February 2006Project Proposal
A virtualisation system could allow for multiple operating systems to run at the same time, thus creating multple \"Virtual Servers\" on one machine.
Xen enables to cut a single physical machine into virtual machines that each behave as an individual system.
Running applications on virtual machines offers savings on hardware and maintenance costs while maintaining the security and stability of a dedicated server.
The uses include \"dedicated\" servers for hosting purposes, testbed for multiple operating systems, and in universities allowing students to use a server (or multiple) to mess around with without breaking anything.
I\'m negotiating with some colleages at University to see if we can set up an IT lab based on PowerPC equipment to teach courses such as Operating Systems, Computer Architecture etc. This machine would feel right at home in the centre of the lab :-)
Not to mention that the Telecommunication Unit could show some really nice stuff on an Altivec Unit!
Best Regards,
Johan Dams
