TetraPower 970MP (CANCELED) Project
Porting MOL to the 970in category Applications & Software
proposed by JoseJX on 14th February 2006Project Proposal
MOL (mac-on-linux) allows PowerPC operating systems to be run on top of Linux with a focus on Apple OSes. It is extremely fast due to the fact that MOL does not emulate PowerPC CPUs, but rather executes the native code directly. Currently, running MOL on 64bit PowerPC cpus is not supported. Access to an OSW machine would allow the development of a 64bit port of MOL.
To implement a PowerPC 970 port of MOL, there are a few things that need to be accomplished. First, support for the 970 needs to be added to MOL\'s cpu virtualization code. Next, the kernel modules (which actually perform the virtualization) need to be updated. Finally, the userspace code itself needs to be checked for 64bit compatibility.
I currently maintain MOL for Gentoo and periodically release MOL snapshots containing the Gentoo patchset for use on other distros.
Since this proposal was submitted, I have released a few additional versions of MOL containing bug fixes. We are now at version 0.9.71.1. In 0.9.72_pre1, I have started to add support for compressed disk images using qemu\'s QCow format, as well as better support for DMG images. Other features that are being considered right now are:
1. Re-adding OpenBios support.
2. Fixing sound issues (skipping, recording)
3. Finish Linux-on-Linux support (already started, modules available)
4. New Video driver
