1. Introduction
Heat is a constant problem here in Australia, were the average computer idles at over 40-45 degrees and will overheat on hot days, this leads to more cooling which leads to more noise. a highly undesirable thing for a media center
2. Overview
I propose to investigate methods of cooling in a high temp environment that are as quiet as possible for use in a home theater computer as well as look into the use of solar panels to reduce the need for a power socket (and being a low voltage system this would reduce the need for a high powered power supply therefore reducing heat even further)
3. Implementation
This would be mainly a hardware project however there would be investigation into software techniques to reduce the power consumption these would include technologies such as dynamic frequency scaling, alti vec enhanced media players (mplayer, xine) power management of peripherals as well as the selection of low noise/heat parts
Hardware wise there would be investigation into low power hardware (eg the video card that is already included) and cooling such as fans, peltier. water-cooling and the ducting of all of these to reduce heat and noise
4. Deliverables
The end result would be a guide that would (hopefully) be platform and distribution independent, however things such as configuration scripts, hardware wiring diagrams and how-to guides that are produced would also be available, this would also be integrated with my approved UPS project (http://projects.ppczone.org/projects.php?project=197) to help handle power managementProject Blog Entries
