Efika 5200B Project
IT-Consultant-use for Linux and/or OpenSolaris-JumpStart installation servers

in category Applications & Software

Project Summary
A tiny install-server for IT-Consultant-use for Linux and/or
OpenSolaris-JumpStart installation servers! Just plug it into
the network and a net-boot capable client would start high speed
installing. It could carry custom OS flash-images with
applications and their presets plus patch-sets. Laptops are often
not able to carry installation servers, when in some cases the
employer forces the laptops to be installed with a well known
closed-OS because of certain company-teamware. Or the laptop suffers
of a chronicly too small harddisk. So the very small but even more
powerfull EFIKA could be the always ready-to-use solution. This
mini-server would even not need a display and be very lightweight
when using a 2.5\" hd and still small with a 3.5\" hd.

  EFIKA arrived! :)

Many thanks again to Genesi and Freescale for the neat
small EFIKA-Board. FedEx delivered it this week.

Ordering a Samsung 2.5" HD and the picoPSU for 12V
input to ATX, I will make the case as small and
lightweight as possible, to take advantage of EFIKAs
main benefit! Until I use it in a prelimnary setup:

Prepared pci-cards on the picture for testing:

  • Intel 1000 GigE
  • Sun QuadFastEthernet
  • Realtek 100mbit

The Debian Installer boots fine via network from a tftp
server. It's really good to have a serial console with
an OpenFirmware!
