Phone system emergency rollover systemin category Hardware

Project Summary
My local community health center could make use of an efika system for an interesting application. We currently have an issue with the emergency rollover of phones here from the 24 channel PRI and POTS services that terminate in our PBX. If the line from our provider goes down at their end, they can detect that and switch incoming calls to an answering service. But, if the fault is any place from the CSU/DSU onward into our equipment, they can't (or won't try to) detect that. At our end, someone has to notice the line is down and find a working phone to have our service forwarded to the answering system or call our provider to have the switch made.
A simple box that monitors these phone lines could detect if it's possible to get a outside line from the PRI through the phone switch. If a dead line or a fast busy signal is detected, that would mean the PRI or the phone switch was dead. It would then go onto high alert and try again. After some amount of retrying, it could automatically switch the lines to our backup.
It would continue to test the lines to detect that the PBX and PRI were back up and then would dial to cancel forwarding. Along the way it should probably launch email or a screen message to alert people that the phones were down and switched. A web interface could be included for setting up numbers to be called, messages and other adminstration features.
The efika would make an excelent choice for this project because of it's low power nature (easy to keep powered on backup for extended periods of time) and small profile (our wiring closet is jam packed!).Project Blog Entries
