Efika 5200B Project
Airplane / Car telemetrics & Embedded Digital Entertainment System/Modulein category Applications & Software
proposed by pvdabeel on 30th January 2006 (accepted on 10th February 2006)
Project Summary
In a plane, the $99 Efika board could be installed with a touchscreen in the passenger seat. A $10 dollar 640x480 camera can be added to the board to allow in-flight video conferencing/meetings. A user would be able to make Video/Voice over IP calls to the ground as well. In addition the aircraft contains one or two Home Media and Communication Systems which can broadcast several channels of content to each Efika (on demand for first class and multi-casting pre-programmed for second class). The efika performs time-shifting of that content, allowing people to communicate with the steward without having to miss a minute of their movie. The HMC system can receive DVB-S live television and gets plane telemetry through the serial port. In a demo setting this can be simulated by connecting to a GPS module. Music can be provided as well. Content can be wirelessly broadcasted as well either through 802.11g (several channels) or Freescale UWB. (Laptop users would require a USB module, which can be purchased at boarding time)
The project would develop an embedded operating system with attractive user interface for the Efika which gives the user basic control over the all the different modules. The system could also be deployed in a car, communicating with mobile phone's in the car using bluetooth.
The same software can be reused for the HMC system, the Efika could be sold as a satellite for the HMC system. The HMC system would store all the content for an entire home, the satellites (which could be portable and use Freescale UWB) get their content from the UWB system.Project Blog Entries
