Efika 5200B Project
Personal radar device

in category Applications & Software
proposed by Leviticus on 1st February 2006 (accepted on 10th February 2006)
Project Summary
Your own personal radar. Use a dual-head graphics card as both an AWG (~200 MHz bandwidth -> ~1.5 m range resolution) and for the LCD display. Add an RF amplifier, mixer and suitable VGA framegrabber and you have a radar that can detect and plot moving (perhaps even stationary) objects behind walls. Add a motion sensor, wave the device and you might even be able to do simple SAR imaging.

  Ain't gonna work

Since there is only one PCI slot on the EFIKA and thus no room for both a framegrammer and a graphics card (and USB 1.1 is really, really slow), I don't think this will ever work ...

I'm considering making it a SODAR ("sonic detection and ranging", a.k.a. "acoustic RADAR") project instead. The EFIKA running the OS and application from a flash disk will be totally silent! The frequency range might suit the 5200 better too.

So .. anybody interested in buying me a Wii system so I can hook up the Wiimote for positioning? :-)
