Efika 5200B Project
Efika as a small size server

in category Applications & Software
proposed by Dmitrij Kozhevnikov on 18th October 2006 (accepted on 19th October 2006)
Project Summary
Many organization have servers in middle or big tower case, in where are many free 5.25 slots. When they want to add server to the lan they buy another one. But in most cases its more effective to place efika board in the 5.25 free slot and it may works as a small file, or mail, or print server or so on.
Another example. I can put efika board in the free 5.25 slot and its work as a backup storage drive which backup data when i want. I planned use as a OS - MSVS v3.0 thats i want ported to Efika and as a backup programm - Bacula or FSBackup.
For a small cost we have 2 or more computers(servers) in one case.

The hardware part of development Efika as a small size server is completed !!!

The established and connected server:

The detailed general view:

Stuffing of a server:

Configuration:
1. Efika
2. 80Gb hdd
3. Radeon 9250 128Mb
4. Internal power supply
5. USB to PS/2 adapter

In the given decision it was possible in standard 5.25 compartment of the computer case to place completely working system on the basis of the accessories presented above. As the case the case from cd rom, little bit modified has been used. At present for Efika following operational systems - Crux, Debian, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Slackintosh, Ubuntu are officially accessible. Unfortunately, the narrowest part in Efika is the size of operative memory that does not allow without the certain degree of adjustment and optimization, to use the given distribution kits enough effective for the problems put in the given project. In this plan more productive decision should be MorphOs which output is planned in the near future. However, MorphOs in what that to a measure it is deprived that spectrum of the software accessible to distribution kits, based on Linux.

Main advantages:
1. Low power consumption systems as a whole.
2. The compact sizes and an opportunity of installation at 5.25 a compartment of the case.
4. Use of the small-sized built in power unit 220 volt.
5. Completely noisefree and coolerfree the decision.
6. There is no necessity for periodic cleaning interiors of system.
7. All sockets and controls are deduced on the forward panel.

Following step in the given project is installation of distribution kits of the operational systems accessible at present for platform Efika, and also them, subsequently, thin adjustment and every possible optimization, with the purpose to find the most productive the decision for creation on its base of a hardware-software complex.
