Efika 5200B Project
Utopios handheld computerin category Other

Project Summary
We would like to release Utopios with a handheld computer similar to the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000. While the EFIKA seems a bit large, I hope that perhaps it could be modified to be a bit smaller and make a good competing platform to consider instead of the Zaurus hardware (which is lacking in some areas). The project would aim to not only ensuring Utopios supports the platform properly, but also to hopefully shrink and design the EFIKA board into a handheld platform. I personally do *not* have the necessary hardware background for the latter goal, so I am hoping someone interested in this idea who does can also participate in the project.
For details on the Utopios operating system, see http://utopios.org (to summarize, similar to Gentoo, but with compile-time and user-friendliness problems solved)Project Blog Entries

EFIKA arrived today-- it needs a PSU, 2.5" HD, and either a video card (PCI or 1.3V AGP) or null serial cable to be usable. Working on setting up a simple Debian install to copy files off a used HD, then I can begin hacking away.

The goal is to get a handheld computer, preferably around the size of the Sharp Zaurus SL-Cxx0 computers, but capable of running a full Utopios operating system. We would like to eventually get this to the point where it can be sold on a real-world market. This project can be divided into three groups:
1) hardware design to make the EFIKA more user friendly (LCD, keyboard, etc)
2) Linux drivers for any hardware used
3) general platform and UI support for Utopios (things such as touchscreen-as-a-mouse interaction)
If you would like to help out with this project (we especially could use people experienced with hardware design for group #1), please email me at luke-jr@utopios.org
