Efika 5200B Project
Saving power on PowerPC microprocessors in category Hardware
proposed by ronin on 23rd February 2006 (accepted on 7th October 2006)
Project Summary
Current computers simply consume too much electricity to be deployed in poorer countries, but certain architectures consume less power than others and would be suitable for deployment in developing nations.
The goal of this project would be to determine how to reduce the power requirements through a number of methods to make computing more affordable to developing nations. By not requiring 200+ watts as is normal, a simple lead acid battery could be used.
This power saving feature set could be achieved by code optimisation, load balancing, hardware additions or modifications and extensions of the BIOS and/or kernel.Project Blog Entries
