Efika 5200B Project
FireFox-Linux kiosk for public web accessin category Applications & Software
proposed by mcaughron on 20th March 2006 (accepted on 22nd March 2006)
Project Summary
I was one of the winners of the Linux on Power 2005 contest (held last summer) by porting OpenKiosk to Linux on Power. What I propose is something similar, but different. For the EFIKA, I would start with a slimmed-down Debian and then build Xorg for it (would use a common ATI video card if there isn\'t on-board video already). Then all kiosk components would be compiled (based on GNOME instead of KDE like OpenKiosk was). The finished kiosk system would provide highly available web access, and would include GAIM for instant messaging. There will be an automated erasure of browser cache, cookies, site passwords, etc. at the end of each user session as well as a white-list/black-list to control public web site access (for intranet-only scenarios). The finished kiosk would boot on a CD or write-protected USB drive and could be used in airports, bus terminals, cafeterias, libraries, etc. for reliable public web access.
