Ubiquitous Computing Using Embedded PowerPC Units

Project Summary
The goal of my project would be to create a wireless portable processing unit with publicly available services allowing people in a location to share and interact with others in their immediate area in new and unusual ways.

The hardware aspect of the project would be setting up an EFIKA to run off of a portable power-source, adding a portable hard-drive for storage, and a WiFi adapter, all in a compact and durable container.

The software aspect of the project would be setting the system up as a WiFi access point and redirecting all initial web requests to a homepage listing and describing the different services available.

The services themselves could be varied in nature, here’s a list of ideas that I’ve come up with but suggestions are welcome:

-Public forum or Bulletin board
Users would be able to post messages, list classifieds, and things like that.

-Browser-based Chatroom
This would allow users to interact in real-time with others in the area who might be bored (ie in a classroom).

-Games
Browser-based games (ie Flash), preferably with scores being tracked on the server unit.
This would encourage interaction in the form of competition between players.
Multi-player games would be a possibility as well.

-Streaming-Radio Station
A requests-based streaming audio station using a library of music in storage.
Users would browse the music available and append their requests to the station playlist.
Thus users would be exposed to each-other’s tastes in music.

-Public Shared Storage Area
A certain amount of storage would be made available to users for sharing small files with each-others.
