Portable storage solution for digital camerasin category Hardware

Project Summary
One of the biggest problems for digital photographers on the field is storage of the pictures. It can be several GB/day, which usually requires to carry a laptop or a lot of memory cards, both expensive and not practical.The project would be to build a cheap and light storage box to which one could plug the digital camera (through USB) and automatically transfer all the photos. There is no immediate plan to add a LCD screen, mainly for cost reasons, but it is a possible extension. Another would be to allow the box to be used as an audio player.
The only extra hardware needed would be a 40/60GB 2\"5 hard disk and a resistant case. Perhaps a couple buttons and a led or two, to indicate when transfer is over.
On the software part, the main part would be to design it as to work without extra control through a LCD screen.
