Efika 5200B Project
Gateway/hub for intelligent home wireless sensor network

in category Applications & Software
proposed by djm63 on 6th March 2006 (accepted on 20th March 2006)

Developers: Douglas Millward, Adam J. Forster
Project Summary
The efika would be used as the basis for a low power gateway/hub that would connect a home wireless sensor network to the Internet. Initial applications will focus on intelligent assistant/monitoring applications for independent living adults with special needs. However, there is scope to expand into home security/remote monitoring applications. My university is currently involved in a research project called BioLive that is looking at remote monitoring of the home environment - we would like to evaluate te EFIKA as a possible gateway.

We are currently heading towards the end of the first phase of the Biolive project. We are aiming to put the prototype system into field-testing in sheltered accommodation some time in July.

I would like to say a big thank you to Bill and Raquel who have blogged about our progress and made our project overview available to download.

We have designed a questionnaire, and in connection with other partners we are surveying their clients looking for potential volunteers for our first phase.
The first phase will be using zigbee motes and TelosB boards to detect variables such as light levels, temperature, movement and contacts to determine the environment and safety of the home.
Our first user interface will be php based - files to follow.
