Project Summary
The EFIKA Jukebox project aims to create a tiny box tuned for music playback, based on the EFIKA. The box could boot a highly customized Linux, or MorphOS distribution, tuned for the job. Instead of the desktop it should start an user interface, which allow users to select songs to play, create playlists, and to upload songs to the device from network sites, SD cards, USB drives, etc. It at least should support the most widespread sound formats, like MP3, Ogg Vorbis and WAV. Additional support could include things like support for lossless audio codecs, like FLAC, or other proprietary formats like WMA. But these are no priorities until the main software working.
The device could be controlled from a touch screen or a customized keyboard, with dedicated buttons to play, stop, fwd/rwd, move cursor on the interface, etc.
Other ideas include to create/select customized cases to sell the box for pubs, or another customized, very slim case for home use, to fit it into a hifi equipment. Special version also could be developed to put the thing on board of a car. The box could provide network streaming features, providing Shoutcast streams of the played music. Another possibility is to offer a full web interface for everything above. Car version could include an optional wifi interface for such.
Also including full networking brings the possibility of countless other possibilities.
Project key points:
1., the development will happen mainly under Linux because of stability and more robust development tools.
2., the project mainly includes software development, and the software should be written with compatibility in mind with all possible hardware configurations, to support creation of wide variety of end user products.
3., the software should be written with compatibility in mind with other hardware, such as the ODW.
4., where possible, the software should be written to work on MorphOS with minimal modifications, after EFIKA version of MorphOS goes public.Project Blog Entries
