Project Proposal
I would use the board for many different purposes, ranging from OS testing to performance evaluation.

- My primary use of the machine would be OS testing. I started betatesting of SUSE Linux about eight years ago, and ODW more than a year ago. I filed many bugreports, recently also for other Linux distributions. Support from distributions other than Debian and Gentoo is often broken during development. By providing testing and feedback, this situation can be enhanced.

- I\'m providing the SUSE PPC community with Packman ( http://packman.links2linux.org/ ) packages recompiled for PPC. Using this machine would enable me much quicker compiles and more frequent updates.

- Performance evaluation and tuning: The 8641D is equipped with 4 gigabit ethernet ports, which have TCP/IP off-load capacity and also two fast CPU cores with Altivec. I have experiences with Linux / PC based routers / firewalls. I would like to use this to build a 8641D based router / firewall using BGP and iptables and check how it compares to PC based solutions in price, performance and maintenance costs. I have access to a Cisco router laboratory at a Cisco education site, where I studied and can also perform some real world tests by an ISP. These environments can help me to fine tune Linux and necessary applications for maximum performance on 8641D.
