Hi, i seem to be having a problem installing gentoo linux or any linux because whenever i try to compile a kernel i get internal compiler error's complaining about invalid pointers.

I've tried replacement memory/hdd/graphics card, with no luck

I think it could possibly be a CPU problem.

Any help would be apreciated.

OK, let's eliminate the software possibilities first.

It sounds like the Live CD boots. Are you doing a Stage 1 or Stage 3 installation?

If you are going Stage 1, were you able to complete the bootstrap step? Were you able to emerge --emptytree system?

Can you post your /usr/src/linux/.config and /etc/make.conf files?

on gentoo doing i'm doing a stage3 install which i have done hundreds of times on x86 systems.

i get the same error using debian to compile a kernel aswell.

tried different kernel version's make no difference.

the error "Internal Compiler error - segfault" happens at totally random times at different places.

i've been in touch with Guanne at GCS-Data and he has advised me to clean the cpu edge/socket, which i have done and make's no difference.

Cleaning the edge connector is a good idea. Do it again to be sure - I'm sure Gunne has given you the "use a soft pencil eraser" method but you could also use alcohol, or a non-abrasive contact cleaner, and a cotton bud. If you use the eraser method too much eventually some dark day in the future, you will rub off a contact completely.

While you have it out, hold the CPU card up to the light and peek through where the CPU and heatsink make contact; make sure you don't see any beads of light (think Solar Eclipse) or that it is "angled" - the heatsink should be absolutely parallel to the CPU ceramic, and touching all of the die. I'd quite like to know too if you have a small square wafer between the heatsink and CPU (this helps keep the heatsink steady) or not. If this wafer is at an angle it rests on the capacitors on the CPU and teases the heatsink up.

After that make sure the CPU card is very well seated and take care not to touch the heatsink as you press it in otherwise you'll ruin any checks you just made.

That covers all of the "overheating" kinds of scenarios.



What memory do you have installed? How many sticks? There are some small problems with installing memory in both slots currently which we hope to solve in a future firmware update. In the meantime it may be that you fell foul to them - the symptom basically is random segfaults and kernel panics.

I have cleaned the edge connector again using some isopropanol and safewipes, checked the cpu the square wafer is there, i have also replaced the fan/heatsink cleaned/reapplied heat transfer paste, cpu looks to be seated ok although it does wiggle a from side to side a bit in the slot.

I'm using a 512mb ddr333 twinmos single dimm, have tried various other dimm's of different make's and size's.

Still getting the same errors....

no my machine never crashes it always stays up it's just my compiler
is segfaulting and i'm getting internal compiler errors at random points.
