Hello,

is there a way to change the resolution of the OpenFirmware promt permanently? I have connected my Efika to a FullHD display, but that cannot display the resolution Efika shows at the OpenFirmware promt. The display sais Mode not supported.

Get to a firmware prompt and type

setenv fb-mode 1280x1024x32

Or something similar. If it's not a VESA standard mode, I don't know if it will work. I am not sure if the graphics card you have would support "true HD modes" (1280x720 or 1900x1080i) out of the firmware, but you can at least give it a graphical mode.

800x600x32 is absolutely guaranteed to work if you have any problems.

It seems the Samsung display is pretty choosy with the resolution. I wasn't able to get an ok promt on it yet. I've contacted Samsung to get some information about the resolutions supported at the HDMI port. The handbook is pretty quiet about such information...

If after installation of parameter of a videomode through setenv fbmode you have not seen anything on the screen - type setenv fbmode 0x0x0 and reboot - should help. Installation checked up to this videomode has not helped me.

By the way, it is interesting, why Debian and OpensSuse 10.3 by default during loading and after, of couse, use in console the 1280x1024 videomode?

The firmware framebuffer doesn't seem to be utilized in Linux without some very strange circumstances coming about on Macs. Using video=ofonly may force it but as far as I see this has not worked since the feature came to light in pre-release Pegasos firmwares.

Someone needs to fix the Linux Open Firmware fb driver.

a side note:

when linux loads the radeonfb kicks in and always uses the correct (native) resolution on all my screens (all connected through dvi or hdmi adaptors).

as far as I know linux checks the fb drivers in a specific order and uses the first that matches.

Except

1) if you specify video=ofonly it should never bring up any other driver, in fact it simply doesn't give you a display

2) if you only compile in the open firmware framebuffer, it never loads at all, even if you do specify video=ofonly

It's broken, needs fixing.. what if you don't have a Radeon? What if it's a brand new kind of chipset and you can only get it to init a VESA mode from firmware? :D
