Hi !

I would like to know if MorphOS x.y (1.5 / 2.0 or whatever) is going to be released in a near future.

Here is the latest official information we got about it on the website :
"23.11.2006 - MorphOS will support the EFIKA
The MorphOS Team is pleased to announce that the next public release of MorphOS will support the EFIKA. The EFIKA is a low-power and silent miniature mainboard based on the Freescale MPC5200B SoC."

Looking into the Efika developers project, one can see that a lot of them are based on a MorphOS system.
So... we are now 10 months later and there is nothing much new except rumors and a few screenshots that could also have been made with any Pegasos...

So what is the status of it ?
Is it almost released ? not yet started ? VIP-distribution reserved ? or just another Amiga vaporware ?
Can we expect to have a downloadable Efika-demo soon ?

2 more weeks, be patient :)

I have actually seen MorphOS 2.0 in action, so it's certainly not vaporware. Just look at the last 15 minutes of the video available here: http://bbrv.blogspot.com/2007/07/scenecon-reloaded.html
I'm a beta testing maniac both by hobby and work, but could not get a copy...

The status of MorphOS 2.0 can be described as working beta. There are some problems however still stopping the release.

Administrative or technical problems? Is there any single component that is holding the release? Are you thinking about answering this poor sod, but will NOT press that button? :D

BTW, is there a 3D gfx driver for the gfx chip of the Efika2 (xgi ?) ?

it depends if you want a stable and useable OS or a technical demo that crashes after a few mins.
i don't know but as Genesi got the sources, i guess it won't really be a problem. I suppose the morphOS team will be provided with Efika2 boards once it's out if they decide to support it.

Looking at some video demo's of morphos i got the impression that it was stable already. Or were these of the previous version? E.g. if the latter is the case why not release the previous version and provide an update later. Microsoft does this all the time (xp, sp1, sp2 and me as an inbetween) and even linux does that. But i can wait. Lot's of other things todo (even with the efika without morphos).

i wouldn't call an OS "stable" just because it doesn't crash when you move a window :)

Agreed. It does seem rather silly that given 99% of Efika OS-related things are very experimental and unstable that people still can't even get an early verison to try at their own risk.

sure but will you accept to pay for it actually ?
MorphOS 2.0 won't be free, you'll have to registrer and get a key. Do you think it would be fair to pay for something you can "try at your own risk" ?
I'd rather pay for something i can use.

While this is true, it's also true that this wait is destroying the community. Go figure, if the day MorphOS 2.0 arrives and nobody cares then.

The MOS-Team might publish a restricted trial version for free (at least until a non beta version is out). A time out during operation like with the unregistered PUP-version spings immediately to mind (maybe even cut down the time out to 1h or 30 min). Something like that. Of course it should be safe against cracking but it seems to work well with the PUP version.
