EDIT: you can grab the newest netboot images here (when there will be newer ones): http://dev.gentoo.org/~corsair/efika/

Hello,

I've just created a fresh netboot image for my efika and I would like to share it with you 8)

note 1: nothing is tweaked and things aren't working as they should. only basic setup is done right now :roll:

note 2: I have defaulted the console output to ttyPSC0, so if you are using a graphics card then you have to place the correct console= option to the kernel (I think so.. I cannot try though)...

follow this steps, if you want to try it out:

1. Grab the image from here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~corsair/efika/efika_20070125.img

2. setup a tftp server and make the image accessable
Code:
$ emerge atftp
$ mkdir /tftroot/
$ /etc/init.d/atftp start
$ cp /path/to/efika_20070125.img /tftproot/efika.img
$ chown -R nobody:nobody /tftroot/
3. boot your efika with this command:
Code:
ok boot eth:the.ip.add.res,efika.img
in my case:
Code:
ok boot eth:192.168.0.2,efika.img
4. be happy :wink:

5. grab a gentoo stage and install it to your hard disk :-D

I'll tweak the image when I've some spare time again.

Thanks to the folks from debian who have created the mkvmlinuz tool, which made this so painless.

regards,

-corsair

well done ! sounds like a painless way to install Gentoo on Efika, i'll try that later this weekend.
thanks !

thanks. Even if I don't know if it's possible to install gentoo with this image yet ^^ I'll try to chroot into my existing gentoo installation on the hard disk this evening.

I actualy grabbed the first busybox config I found, so I don't even know if fdisk is available.

I'll definetly integrate some udev foo; parted; a fancy motd; filesystem tools for reiserfs 3 (or even reiserfs 4), ext3 (maybe even ext4) and xfs.

After that my focus would be on applications like irssi and such. well.. I'll see what is possible with netboot and what would make a *huge* image...

regards,

-corsair

Hi,

Could you post your kernel configuration? I am trying to get initramfs to work but I am not sure how the kernel should be configured so that rootfs cpio would be embedded into kernel image.

yes, I also needed some time to figure out how to embed the root file system in the image. take a look here:

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/mkvmlinuz

That great piece of software combines the kernel and the rootfs.

If you still need the kernel config, I'll upload it somewhere.

Yes, I managed to bring those two suckers together :)

Anyway, even that initramfs seems to be extraced, rootfs is not mounted.

root=/dev/root is wrong. Try to set "Kernel options --> Default bootloader kernel arguments" to:
Code:
root=/dev/ram rw console=ttyPSC0 panic=3

Hey!

Found the problem! I was accidentally removed bin/busybox from my rootfs and /init was linked agains it so the kernel was not able to execute /init.

By restoring the /bin/busybox I was able to boot the system.

this is a new netboot image. it's based on 2.6.24-rc3-git5. It should include fdisk and everything that's needed to install gentoo.

Unfortunately I'm unable to get network running. ifconfig eth0 up works, but ping/wget/etc does not work... can someone give me a hint?

Hi.

Could it be the efika.forth Firmware patch that is needed:
http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms ... devicetree

This should be needed for the new Ethernet driver.

Johan.

thanks! that fixed it. I didn't recognized that the efika 'forgets' the new device tree, when you press the reset button!

Tomorrow I'll test, if I can do a full install on the machine, or if there are packages missing.

EDIT: It should be able to use the image from a USB drive, too. Just place it and the efika.forth on the drive, 'execute' the efika.forth start the image.
