I want to use Efika for Java web development and deployment. In particular I need JDK, ANT, Tomcat and possibly Netbeans or Eclipse.

Is that feasible?

Hi,

I have tried IBM JVM some time ago to run Globus Toolkit container. It was working, but I had to disable JIT. I didn't perform any further testing, due to lack of time, but I think that mentioned applications should work.

In my opinion, development (eclipse and tomcat) with 128MB of RAM will be rather difficult, but it should be possible to deploy some services and achieve reasonable performance (after some tuning).

Are all those tools even available on PowerPC?

Well, they run more or less on openSUSE 10.2 PPC & Factory, but using GNU ClassPath, or what is it called. I did not test it further than installing and starting up the applications, as I'm not a Java guy...

SLES 10 has IBM Java 1.4, while SLES 10 SP1 has IBM Java 1.5. The later one also includes a firefox plug-in, but crashed often when I tested a few months ago.

We had Eclipse installed and running nicely on the first Pegasos ODW machines, so should work on Efika too...

Doing development on an almost-embedded board is pointless. Esp. if it's Java. What you need is a Java development machine -which might be x86, or ppc, or even sparc- and develop your software there, and then deploy it on the efika. The only thing you should care about is having the same versions -at least they should support the same APIs and have the same jars- on both the development system and the Efika. That way you save on development time -the EFIKA will be definately slower on compiling than any modern PC, even the Pegasos will outperform the EFIKA by orders of magnitute.
