OK, bbrv, I understand this was humour, but I wanted to say that I'm ready to even invest money into the project before a product is out, to make it come true.
I have no idea at all of what is the dev cost of such a thing (is it really that much ?).

But if you consider that you already have (as you said) a community of many developers and skilled people, and that you also have users like me that would be ready to pay a kind of share (like in stock exchange) of the devs. Would that help in a way ? or absolutely not ? Mr Freescale are you also here ? ;-)

Anyway, the Efika is a nice toy and I will play with it waiting at the same time for, I hope, a real nextgen Pegasos.

The EFIKA/Open Client is step one back in that direction.

We have to help IBM to understand there is opportunity. The truth is unless they really focus on power they can be replaced too.

R&B :)

It's only a crazy idea, but what do you think if all that want a new Pegasos could pay for it even before the design was ended?

Tomorrow, the 8th :-) Of course I am hoping for the announcement of the new dual core Pegasos III with its MOS port ready out of the gate..

Hey, a guy can dream right :-D Heck, I'd just settle for firewire drivers for MorphOS on the pegasos, then I could edit videos on it.. Sonic, how's that coming eh?

For obvious historical reasons we do not operate pre-order schemes.

Any system whereby we have taken money for a system which had not been produced or prototyped, it has only been put on the store once all the parts have arrived, time has been booked at the factory for production, and Gerald and Thomas are confident that it will go well. Most systems (notably the Efika in November) have then shipped within 2-3 weeks.

The money would only be useful to development if it came before ordering the parts; but then customers are at the mercy of supply problems. Lead times on some components can be up to 12 weeks, sometimes they can be even longer.

And why can't Pegasos package a machine based on the commercial version of the PASemi Electra motherboard.

This mainboard seems to be finished and easy to use (ATX form). Would it cost so much to do? Would it be complicated?

:)

Amiga Inc has just published specs of a future Amiga with a 2GHZ PowerPC dual core CPU !

See here : http://www.amiga.com...

Power Design Specifications PowerPC board:

* Based on the P.A. Semi PWRficient PA6T-1682M dual core 64 bit CPUs clocked at 2GHz.
* RoHS compliant ATX form factor.
* Four (4) DDR2 DIMM slots.
* One (1) PCI Express x16 slot for high performance graphics cards.
* One (1) PCI Express x2 slot for high performance I/O cards.
* One (1) PCI Express x1 slot for standard I/O cards.
* One (1) PCI 32 bit slot for legacy cards.
* Six (6) USB 2.0 ports.
* Two (2) Gb Ethernet ports.
* Two (2) UART ports for serial connectivity and debug.
* One 8Mb Flash EEPROM containing U-Boot firmware.
* Four (4) SATA II ports based on the Silicon Image SiI3132 (x2) .

Note : now they need an OS for it ;-)

I don't like ATX format....micro-ATX is the best choice IMHO.

Linux?

Jokes aside, Adam said in IRC SMP, 64 bit support and driver issues for OS4 would be no issue. Sure, if he says so...
He also confirmed that drivers and such "little" things are part of his contract.
So he has to do the hardware and write drivers, include SMP and make OS4 64 bit.
What a megalomanic one man show!

Beside that such a beast of a maschine is just not too useful for OSes like MOS or OS4 (in their current incarnations).
The most interesting chip for these systems is IMO the 8641 (currently not the D variant due to lack of SMP).

I seriously doubt we will see anything PA6T based by Ack/AI any time soon. MAybe they rush out some eval boards from PA, bu I doubt we'll see a finished product...

@Neko:

"It would again be a ... $199 CPU card (maybe more!) just like it was 5 years ago"

OK... but I am willing to pay $200 or more for a CPU upgrade card.

For example, NewTech offers 7447A based CPU upgrades for Macs.

This one costs $239,99 and is clocked at 1,6 GHZ:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20 ... XG47S1600/

This is kind of exactly what I want for my Peg2. The 7447A does run in the Peg2 (AFAIR you made some 1,4 GHZ 7447A cards for the ODW), and 1,6 GHZ is a big step forward. Sure, 2 GHZ would be better, but 1,6 GHZ would be nice, too.

Personally, I would not hesitate to pay $250 for a 1,6 GHZ 7447A card, because I really want it, and because my Peg2 motherboard does still meets my needs except the CPU speed, and because a Pegasos2-successor seems to be still far away.

NewTech did even offer a 7447A based CPU upgrade card at 2,0 GHZ which costed $399, but the link to that card is dead.

But they still offer a 7448 based CPU upgrade card clocked at 2,0 GHZ which costs $449:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer Technology/MAXG48S2000/

Another solution _could_ be an adapter so we oould use PPC upgrade cards from NewTech or one of the other CPU upgrade card vendors for PPC Macs.

And yes, the Pegasos2 is 5 years old, but just because of this fact and because you cannot offer a faster successor currently you should consider a CPU upgrade for the community.

One year ago bbrv asked the community if we want such a CPU upgrade, but there were not enough people interested in this - I think because the OSW was announced for 2006.

But now "everyone" needs or wants more horse power more urgently than in mid-2006, and nobody knows when the Pegasos2 successor will be out.

So, why not ask the community again if they want a 1,6 GHZ clocked 7447A CPU upgrade for the Peg2 at, for example, $250 or so? How many people would be necessary to be interested in this to make it happen?

Maybe we should ask NewerTech if they could make some of these cards for the Pegasos.

that's a tiny market, that wouldn't be worth it for NeverTech. Same issue for Genesi, the power/price ratio wasn't satisfying for the few 1,4ghz cards that were made.

Yes, I know but never say never. They buy the CPUs in higher quantities so they could get a better price. The plain card itself isn't that expensive. You 'just' have to develope such a card but I doubt anyone will ever do so. No more Pegasos II, no more CPUs cards. Next one please.
