Ubuntu 7.04 was released today. No more PowerPC.

Not that it concerns me, but I know many liked running
Ubuntu on their Pegasos'es.

This is too bad.

There are no ISOs for PPC but the Ubuntu update manager on my Pegasos tells me that 7.04 is available for upgrade... i haven't tried it yet though ;-)

But there may will be an unofficial Release for PowerPC later. PowerPC is just skipped for the main release.

Don't panic! The PPC isos are here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/release ... y/release/

They're just under "ports" rather than the main release section.

It's really getting hammered at the moment, so you might just want a link to the Desktop torrent:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/release ... so.torrent

I've got it already, so I'll seed it overnight to help out.

the problem is that being "ports" is no longer an officially mantained architecture, so it has to rely only upon community efforts, like the sparc port (well, this never was an official one).

The most important difference is that it will no longer prevents official releases from going out in case of powerpc-only critical bugs.
(Obviously you can always go slackintosh ;-) )

I'm seeding the alternate version now from a 7/24 university server, and will share my experiences once it's also downloaded at home.

BTW: SuSE has a fully supported PPC version, 10.2 works perfectly on Pegasos and full support for EFIKA in 10.3 is under intensive development.

While waiting for the latest SuSE to download I made a quick test of Ubuntu 7.04 Alternate on Pegasos. Problems are just about the same, as I reported in January here and in Ubuntu bugtracker:
- no bootable kernel on the install CD (not a bug, not there for space reasons...)
- no boot manager or bootable kernel is installed (bug)
- Xorg does not work (bug)
The first can be worked around by using mkzimage or mkvmlinuz from SuSE or Debian / Ubuntu. Any volunteer to provide a fixed Xorg repository for Ubuntu 7.04? :-)

this was fixed for edgy when the DVD version came out, unfortunately, i'm not sure if there will be a DVD version this time as PPC support is not official anymore. We also need a fixed xorg.

X does not start due to broken PCI Domain ID handling. I just heard a workaround, but had no chance to test it: umount /sys before starting X and remount afterwards. Yes, it's an ugly hack :-)

"umount /sys before starting X and remount afterwards".

THIS WORKS...
If I "umount /sys"
and restart gdm, everything starts.
But how, please, can I remount "/sys" at his moment?

I tried, but just can't figure it out....

Mario

Emanuel of Pegasos.org did a fix for this a few days ago.

Have a look in his blog for info and how you add the
Pegasos.org download repository in Ubuntu.

For those, who don't have mkvmlinuz or mkzimage, or it fails on them: I created install and boot kernels for Ubuntu Feisty.

http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/feisty_inst
http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/feisty_boot

These are for the 'Alternate' version, as I try to avoid 'Desktop', as that's too much Windows like for me :-) I mean, the installer, the end result is the same, but 'Alternate' is a bit more flexible.

Disclaimer: I did not test this installer image, as the one I used for installation was deleted right after installation... But it should work :-)
