For me the amount of memory available for use when im in xfce4 is quite low so i want to get some ballpark figures for memory usage across the different configurations people have

"uname -a" gives: 2.6.9-1-powerpc PREEMPT
with a virtual terminal active as well as xdm running in the background top gives...
total memory 126000k

69600k used
5000k buffers
42000k cached

However when logged into xfce4 it gives

124000k used
5400k buffer
58000k cached

looking at this, in gui mode, it does consume a lot of memory in my opinion, but it might just be the kernel im using.

Hi.

Don't have the figures right now (will post them as soon as I get home), but with Fluxbox running, these figures should lower quite a lot compared to XFCE.
I run Fluxbox fine without swap over NFS.

EDIT:

Here are the numbers.
All these numbers include a running pcscd, portmap and dropbear.

After boot, no XDM.
MemTotal: 125604 kB
MemFree: 112596 kB
Buffers: 0 kB
Cached: 6996 kB
SwapCached: 0 kB
Active: 7268 kB
Inactive: 2208 kB
SwapTotal: 0 kB

After boot, with XDM only
MemTotal: 125604 kB
MemFree: 101132 kB
Buffers: 0 kB
Cached: 14940 kB
SwapCached: 0 kB
Active: 13088 kB
Inactive: 7176 kB
SwapTotal: 0 kB

After boot, with XDM and Fluxbox:
MemTotal: 125604 kB
MemFree: 92636 kB
Buffers: 0 kB
Cached: 21176 kB
SwapCached: 0 kB
Active: 16492 kB
Inactive: 12184 kB
SwapTotal: 0 kB

Best regards,
Johan

Hi.

Here is a screenshot of EFIKA running, with Fluxbox, some terminals, and a vnc viewer connecting to another computer with Opera running.
The meminfo was taken right after compiling xwd on the Efika to take the screenshot :-)

EDIT:
Another screenshot, basically the same but with Firefox running forwarded through X (and ssh) from the same computer the vnc server is running on. (also the same one where the nfsroot is on, and where I'm posting this from).

Made images into URL, due to size as well...

Best regards,
Johan

Hi all.

One more screenshot:

http://www.cc.puv.fi/~jd/efika/screenshot3.jpg

Efika running in 1024x768 (can't go higher due to crappy monitor) with a vnc client in 800x600, where my fiancé is playing Frozen Bubble... You could say I'm testing usability this way, and I think Efika passed this test :-)

Best regards,
Johan

ok, last screenshot, I promise :-)

This is Efika, running a full screen vncviewer to another Linux machine.
As you can see, there is the usual range of programs running, like Opera, Gimp, OpenOffice, but also Totem playing a video!
This Efika has no harddrive, it boots over NFS. The video and all the applications run on the same Linux computer serves as NFS server.

The system is overall quite fast in this way, and the video is playing without lagging, although not full screen.

Johan

Thanks for all the feedback, i guess its just my install configuration bogging down the memory.

Im just throwing an idea around here, but a very minimalistic kernel, with uClibc plus DirectFB for graphics (and the peripheral packages) would be nice and small for an embedded environment and might be just what the doctor ordered for projects attempting to write games for the efika.
