I don't know if it true (or not) but there is a news on MorphOS-news saying that a MorphOS 1.5 running on an EFIKA will be shown at 'Amiga Meeting Nord'.

Axel Knabe will show the EFIKA board running MorphOS 1.5 at the 'Amiga Meeting Nord' in Bad Bramstedt this weekend. Axel will also take preorders for the board which is planned to be available before christmas 2006.

If this is true, that's 2 news in one :
- MorphOS 1.5
- MorphOS on an EFIKA

Great !

[edit]Seems true, here is a video to download :

there's already a thread on Morphzone about it, with a comment from bbrv.

Yes,
This is important news that it was shown in public. Efika is an ideal platform for Morphos.. a dual booting Efika with Morphos, Linux w/Mythtv would be interesting.

I don't know if it true
The facts:

* MorphOS does run on EFIKA and has for a long time.
* Yes it is demonstrated at these shows.
* No you won't be able to buy an EFIKA with MorphOS, there are no plans for bundles or distribution to end users on Genesi's side.

Any further discussion on the topic of MorphOS on EFIKA, especially on this forum, is pretty much wasted space.

OK, but as they were rumors that it wouldn't, that's great it does.

OK :-(, but I thought that there were developers projects using MorphOS... If it does run now, why wouldn't it be released to end users ?
Sorry for the waste of time & space.

The rumors were that there wouldn't be a release to ordinary users. Those rumors are true.

Then we mistakenly approved them. I made it clear when we were discussing the projects scheme that approving projects meant for MorphOS (like "media center running on MorphOS") should not even be considered, seeing as they may not be able to get the software.

However some of them are entirely possible under Linux too, there is no reason to focus on MorphOS for most of the projects.

Some of them are posted by internal MorphOS team members; and these were easily approved because they have relevancy and actually have a chance of happening (Reggae is a good example, hi Krashan :)

Ask Ralph.

Ask Ralph.
If someone can convince Ralph that there is a sustainable market there will be a release. Some hundred units won't be enough.
Anyway, do not expect too much and you can get surprised positively only. Time will tell.

I have no real wish to get into this "MorphOS on Efika" discussion once again, but I must say that I find it a little strange that "The MorphOS Team" think it's worth investing a lot of time in supporting the vintage dead-end classic Amigas, while they are not interested in the Efika?

I am also a little amazed by their grumpy reaction (as seen on MorphZone.org, at least from *two* of the members) regarding MorphOS being displayed at the Freescale website. Strange ...

You shouldn't be surprised. At least two of the
Team members do pretty much nothing but flaming
on IRC all day long. This weekend I was told how
far up Bill's arse my head was, by one of them..

They have no interest in making MorphOS success-
ful. They prefer sitting on IRC all day long, eating
pizza.

Just forget MorphOS. They don't deserve the
EFIKA or any other platform. Real OSes is
the way to go. Toy-OSes like MorphOS and
AmigaOS should just be burried and forgotten.
It sure would make the world a much better
place to live in.

funny, i got welcomed a few times on IRC by such comments. I stopped going there. It felt like entering a sect and i don't need a guru. Even if this guru is coding kernels.
no need to tell that if you're not a coder yourself you're nothing more than a piece of shit.

They are not not interested in the Efika, but the official line is that MOS is *not ready* for a broader audience. That's why it is available for the PuP boards. Those boards are used by old Amigans but not by Joe average. It's released 'as it' w/o support.
Of course MOS would be quite suitable for some special areas already, but not for a public general usage OS.
The team might be arrogant (well, some of them*), but they are not stupid (well, most of them*).

No need to convince him of anything.

There most certainly is a sustainable market. He knows that.

It just doesn't have any Amiga users in it.

Imagine if you will.. train station ticket machines (and the scoreboard schedules), seatback entertainment on planes, GPS navigation, infotainment devices at museums or zoos (there is a precedent on using the CD32 here :), there are hundreds of possibilities, and anything which requires a high performance operating system which can extract the most bang out of the least clock cycles, with a relative focus on graphics performance and responsiveness perhaps, can run MorphOS.

As an example, Linux takes up too many resources for something like this. If you check most train stations they are running MS-DOS with some application on top. MS-DOS takes up very little resources in comparison (640k is enough for anybody, remember) to a booted Linux kernel where the kernel binary alone is around 3MB. As Linux, X.org, toolkits like Qt and GTK progress, it is bloating up. It simply isn't suitable for the lower end anymore. Embedded devices with 64MB of flash ROM were laughed at 5 years ago when Microsoft said that was the minimum for a board to run Windows CE. iPaq, Jornada, even the new Palms, are monsters of flash usage. Now to get a Linux booting on the same system, you need the same amount. Who is laughing now?

MorphOS fits on a 33MB ISO. If you take out the stuff nobody really needs for essential system usage (MOSSYS:Libs/vorbisfile.library is 1.2MB, things lik gtlayout, ixemul, the 8MB of fonts, 68k emulator) you have a very small concise system which can still run a full desktop. Remove the desktop and run a fullscreen app... you have a very very efficient operating system which can boot out of 2MB of flash memory, load less than 8MB of files from disk or other storage, and barely use much more.

Needs tweaking for the specific application, of course.

Show me a Linux kernel in 2MB, with 8MB of support files that can boot a fully usable graphical desktop. I am sure it can be done (DirectFB perhaps) but it isn't so easy as on MorphOS; I've done it just by deleting files and killing off the script lines that run them.

linux with all the stuff fits 50mb, somebody at
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ told me...

Some ideas for people willing got play the smallest game:

http://picogui.org/index.html <- they need developers btw.
http://www.microwindows.org/ <- they need a webmaster btw.
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fXserver <- kdrive is about 1mb and is X11 and actively maintained.
we all know busybox already.

I guess I gave enough pointers.

Now all someone has to do is put them altogether in a comprehensive, customizable package with a couple (or 15) active software developers willing to consult on it.

You just profiled the reasons why genesi needs to rectify the situation with Morphos developers and move forward towards future goals.
