I've booted from the Ubuntu 6.06.1 Desktop CD using the ubuntu_d_inst boot image. I've used the installer to create partitions, but when it tries to mount the root partition to start installing, it errors saying it can't mount the partition. If I try to mount it manually, I get an error "unknown filesystem: ext3". I get the same error with ext2, ext3, reiserfs and reiser4 partitions. I can't believe the kernel does not have support for *any* Linux filesystem types. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi,
How are you booting the CD? You should not try to mount
an unpartitioned HDD as root during the CD-boot.

Try 'root=/dev/cdrom', 'cdroot' 'root=/dev/ram0' or some-
thing like that.

No, I didn't mount it using a kernel parameter. I booted all the way in to the live environment from the CD, then from a terminal typed "mount /dev/hda3 /mnt". It was then that I got the error "Unknown filesystem: ext3".

The boot command I used in OpenFirmware was "boot hd:0 boot/ubuntu_d_inst splash boot=casper", as specified in the Pegasos Book.

Just a quick update.

I am wondering whether this is a symptom of using czp's boot image (ubuntu_d_inst). After booting I opened a terminal and modprobed reiserfs, and got an error that /lib/<some kernel version>/modules.dep did not exist. I did a uname and the actual kernel version did not match /lib/<some kernel version>. I symlinked a folder to match what modprobe was looking for with the actual foldername, modprobed reiserfs (successful this time), and was then able to mount the partition. I haven't actually tried installing on to it yet as I didn't have time, but at least now I can access reiserfs partitions.

If this is something to do with ubuntu_d_inst, I'm a bit worried that I will have the same problem with ubuntu_d_boot, which will mean I won't be able to boot the newly installed system as the kernel won't have support for the reiserfs root filesystem.

The problem is, that my boot kernels were created for the original version of Ubuntu 6. The one you use is a bit newer, with a newer kenel version. As far as I can remember, Neko published already another set of kernels and tools on the Genesi website to address these problems, and postted about it here. I can't find that post right now. Will post the URL here, when found.

AFAIK Neko did NOT post those boot kernels, as his laptop died or something, then bbrv said they were coming as he was "back up and running" but never did..... :-/

Ooops, then that's why I could not find it. If any of you have the 'vmlinux' and 'initrd' files, or a ready made 'vmlinuz', I'm happy to publish it.
Or I can download the latest boot CD and install it, but that's a long project, not for today.
That's true, but then you need to download 400+ MB of upgrades.

Thanks guys. This might also explain why the PS/2 mouse port on my PegII doesn't work when booted from the Ubuntu CD (but the PS/2 keyboard did - weirdness). I'll download the older version (6.06.0?) from Ubuntu's FTP server and give it a try.

Hmmm, looking on the UK mirror and the 6.06 and 6.06.1 folders both link to the dapper folder, which only contains 6.06.1. Is there another mirror which still contains 6.06?

Ok, just found ubuntu-6.06-desktop-powerpc.iso on the Uzbekistan mirror I guess that one will work with your boot images czp?

I just realized, that 6.06.1 is (or at least was) installed on my machine, at least the alternate version. The kernel should be the same. So please wait another half an hour, and I hope to upload some updated kernel images. All I need to check, if it's still there, as I make a new Linux install sometimes twice a day

If you could upload new ubuntu_d_inst and ubuntu_d_boot images which work properly with 6.06.1, that would be great. Would it be better to use the Alternative version? Would that work with the current boot images? Is that a better version to use anyway?

I don't have the install CD any more, so I can't recreate the install kernel. Could someone upload a tgz of /install/powerpc , so I could create a new install kernel? This one should come from a desktop install CD.

The alternate boot kernel will be uploaed in the next few minutes to http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/ubuntu_a_boot1 (notice the '1' at the end). It should also work with the desktop version.

Once you have Ubuntu up and running, you can do all the Debian woodoo described in other posts (getting the mkvmlinuz script from devel). That will help you after you make a kernel update, just don't forget to run it before reboot

Can you please clarify this process in noob terms? Step by step if possible? I followed the thread on this a while back but was still confused. i did manage to use mkvmlinuz to create a symlink but not really sure how this all works.
