Hello

I tried to get TV-Out working on my Linux/Debian-Box.
I have been trying to get it work using gatos modules. I compiled them, installed them, and it seems xorg accpted them well.

But whatever I tried then, nothing appeared in my tv yet.

Did anyone tried this before, succeded or fail to do this yet?
Can anyone give me some hints, tips?

Greeting
Greg

Hi McGreg!

The gqtos patches work very good on the pegasos!
I use them in both debian and gentoo.
On http://megahurts.dk/rune/tv_output.html
you find the patches & nice instrucions on how to
apply them into your system.
You need to set the option
Option "TVOutput" to either "PAL" or "NTSC"
what does /var/log/Xorg.0.log tell you about the drivers?
cheers,
frostwork

Yes, I used the instructions http://megahurts.dk/rune/tv_output.html.
First a part of my Xorg.log

(**) RADEON(0): Allocating VIP interface(**) RADEON(0): TVOutput opt = NTSC
(II) Loading sub module "theater_out"
(II) LoadModule: "theater_out"
(II) Reloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/multimedia/theater_out_drv.so
(**) RADEON(0): Found theater_out module
(II) RADEON(0): No response from device 0 on VIP bus
(II) RADEON(0): Device 1 on VIP bus ids as 0x4d541002
(II) RADEON(0): No response from device 2 on VIP bus
(II) RADEON(0): No response from device 3 on VIP bus
(II) RADEON(0): Detected Rage Theatre as device 1 on VIP bus
(II) RADEON(0): Detected Rage Theatre revision 00000003
(**) RADEON(0): Entering initTheaterOut, s = NTSC

(II) RADEON(0): no multimedia table present, disabling Rage Theatre.
Maybe this here is the problem?

(**) RADEON(0): RADEONResetVideo,name=XV_TVO_HPOS,atom=79
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONResetVideo,name=XV_TVO_VPOS,atom=80
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONResetVideo,name=XV_TVO_HSIZE,atom=81
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONScreenInit finished

and I have set the option, as show in the introduction about tvoutput.

Option "TVOutput" "NTSC"
I've set it to NTSC, so my monitor will manage that.later I'll maybe change it to PAL.

Now, first have alook at that and we'll see.

Greeting
Greg

I had problems with my TVOut with RADEON 8500 on x86/xp : it was impossible to enable TVout without VGA out enabled at the same time making it impossible to use this video board for a Media Center. On the same hardware, this was working without any problem with an ATI 9700Pro or and ATI 9250.

So that would be interesting to see if this works on a Pegasos II because the 8500 is not listed in the gatos patch graphic boards having been tested.

So has anyone tried a 8500 with TVout only enabled on Pegasos ?

Hi!

No idea about the 8500, but it works fine with a 9000pro.
ATM my gatous-tv-out is turned off, as I haven't applied it yet after an xorg-upgrade, but I'll see
if i can install it tomorrow and compare the
Xorg.logs.
Which gfx-card do you use btw, McGreg?
Is your attached cable OK?
Cable directly plugged in TV?
Already tried PAL?
(if you have a PAL tv, it might be important to set PAL
- maybe it faults otherwise...?)

I'll proibably back tomorrow ;)

cheers,
frostwork

PS: Thanks for the png, bbrv! :D

Interesting and relevent thread guys.. Frostwork can you be more specific about the gatos patch? I'm a little confused how to apply it from that guide. Also, can you guys look at the PVR350/mythtv thread? I can watch tv but not record, it says it records but when i play back it kills the program and seg faults.. :( Also, when I try cat /dev/video0 /home/test.mpg I get a bunch of garbage in my shell window like crazy and no .mpg file..

magnetic

(dont mean to hijack the thread)

Hi!

- extract your original xf86-video-ati sources into your working dir
- cd into the just extracted dir in terminal
- gzip -cd ../patch/to/patchfile/xorg7-6.5.8.0-tv_output.patch.gz | patch -p1

Some output with patching file XXX wil follow.
If s.th. fails you applied the wrong patch to the wrong ati-sources.
Compile the rest as usual.

As of cat-ing ivtv:
don't forget the ">" after /dev/video0 in your above line -
alse you cat the mpeg into the running terminal!

cheers
frostwork

Well, I havent tetsed with PAL yet, but if I remember correctly pal tvs also can cope with NTSC.
My Radeon is a Radeon8500LE (from the xorg.log)

But there are more issues:

Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, NONE"
(as it was in the help)

With this config my monitor doesnt get recognised properly.
All I get is a 640x480 resolution.

Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, AUTO"

My monitor woirks ok with that.

Same when I do

Option "MonitorLayout" "NONE, AUTO"

How important is this option at all?
Did you need to change there anything?

Bad start : "Radeon 8500" is not in the tested cards...
Hope it will work with gatos.

I can't test it at the moment as I'm installing a new Linux Gentoo system on my Pegasos.

Yep, usually more modern pal-tvs can display NTSC.
But maybe the gatos-drivers check somhow if its a
PAL or NTSC tv (no idea if this is even possible...),
find PAL & quit...(?)
>My Radeon is a Radeon8500LE (from the xorg.log)

It's not on the compatibility list geoffrey mentioned
earlier. With some bad luck your card simply isn't supported...

I don't have a Option "MonitorLayout" set here.
Did you try to comment it out?

cheers,
frostwork

I just did change it to PAL..
I also uncommented this
# Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, AUTO"

option.

(**) RADEON(0): Allocating VIP interface(**) RADEON(0): TVOutput opt = PAL

(**) RADEON(0): Entering initTheaterOut, s = PAL

(II) RADEON(0): no multimedia table present, disabling Rage Theatre.
but this still worries me. Is this a part of TV_Input or TV_Output?

Well, I started X, changed resoltion in KDE to 800x600 , which should be a working one for the gatos-modules... no output. nothing at all.

Greetings
Greg

McGreg

If you thouroughly read the gatos driver docs you will see only a few Radeon cards reported as working with the drivers, not only that but you will se furthur in that even those are not garanteed to work! :-(

<sigh> I wish ATI would give linux ppl docs..

I have to imagine that AMD will work to make that happen since the ATI merger... it's too early to say though.

I dont see a reason why AMD should do anything about that.

I hope I will learn something different.
