Just liked to inform you of an easy way to at least temporarily fix the fan which came standard with the G4 cpu card. Here it basically stopped working because it didn't have enough lubrication anymore, caused by dust. I noticed that because when I turned the fan a bit whilst the computer was on it would turn for a while on its own. I took out the cpu card, removed the heatsink and cleaned that off, added fresh thermal compound, cleaned the fan and sprayed some lubrication in the fan's "motor", turned it a few times and whiped off the excess lubrication. Works fine again, for now.

I also fixed the bad fan noise coming from my old Celeron433 cooler by applying some weapons oil
into the motor after which it ran heavenly quiet for about a week - then the noise reappeared.
So it might be advisable to use an oil with higher viscosity or grease for ball bearing fans.
(I did not try since I had a spare/bigger fan lying around as replacement.)

Yesterday I was listening to music played by my Pegasos while dining with my girlfriend and suddenly heard an awful sound. I thought Gentoohad its first crash in months, but when I hard-rebooted there was no signal on screen. I discovered that the dissipator and fan had detached from the cpu. How was the fan attached to the cpu? I found a white plastic screw near there, but how was it used? Do you think I can fix the whole thing? How can I verify that the cpu is not dead? I see a faint dark halo on the back of the cpu card, opposite to the chip... could that be the sign that it just melted for the heat?
The thing that I like the least is that Genesi never released the promised new cpu cards. This could have been the moment I got one from them, but no changes in the products list for months.

Genesi never promised these, they just mentioned it, worked on it, but decided it wasn't worth it. AFAIK there will be no CPU upgrade as i guess they are focusing on the OSW now.
About your card, you can contact BPlan or Genesi to have it fixed.

For real? :) With the sorrow for my poor Peg I forgot that customer care is a truth for Genesi...
Well, I guess I'll have to pay a visit not to the Products section but to the Support section of your site! :wink:
Thank you

Hello again, I would like to know which e-mail address to use and eventually, where to post the "dead" G4...
I didn't find suitable info on the Genesi site...

Rockerman

Why dont you go to your local computer store and buy a nice Zalman or Vantec VGA chipset cooler (gpu cooler for gfx cards) for your peg cpu and see if that works?

support@pegasosppc.com works if I recall correctly :)

As do all our usual email addresses (see email address below). We'll all field them to the right place.

@RockmanX

RELEC, a pegasos retailer in Switzerland sells a lovely quality cpu cooler for the Pegasos CPU module. Easy to install and good performance, my Peg has been running it for almost a year now.
