About three months ago some posts in this forum date the approximate market release of OSW to "3 to 4 months from now", which would account to the beginning of june or july.

Now, not counting the 3d acceleration problems, I've been quite statisfied with Pegasos-II. I've had it running pretty much non-stop for two years and has served me well. However, lately there's been some high-definition video files & such it no longer has the processing speed to display.

I've understood the OSW would fix both the 3D and performance problems, and been awaiting it eagerly for some time now. So, what would be the approximate date home users (who are not in any developer programs or the like) can except to get their hands on the systems?

That could be it, but it could also be August-September. It will really be an issue of funding the production and managing the supply chain through the sale to the end user.

Everything will be happening in that time frame.

R&B :-)

im thinking that a board of such complexity would have a lead time of minimum 5 weeks to possibly 8 weeks mainly depending on the fact that it will be a relatively small run <10k at a time

We will offer September 2006 as the best guess for "regular" users to have the OSW. That seems realistic at this point. Developers will have machines before that.

R&B :)

This quarter, but how many for "home users" we still cannot say for sure.

Anything known about the specs? ;)

A would love to see this config (running Mac OS X):

2x PPC970MP@3.2GHz
256bit-wide memory interface. Each PPC970MP has its own memory controller ;)
8x DDR2-PC6400 800MHz RAM slots
4x PCIe slots
4x USB2
4x FW400
2x FW800
4x HD slots
2x Optical drive slots

And whats about notebooks from Genesi with e600 DC or PA Semis PWRficient?

Regards
Karl

P.S. Is there a newer version of the 970 out there? ;)

O.K. do not take this too serious.
It is not any form of critic on other persons work.
It is only very interesting for me to know, with no special reason.

So here is my question:

Is there any theoretical possibility to have the boards designed in a way that gives the manufacturer the oportunity to build the same boards with singlecore or single CPU's ?

Not that it does really matter. If nobody feels the need to answer it is o.k. too ! :D

yours,
H.

PS:I know everyone could read some documentation to have an opinion on this. But i am not the one who knows how to design a PPC-Board. If so i would be the one answering this type of questions here !?

In theory, you could have only one dual-core (970MP) CPU connected, rather than two, but you could not replace them with single-core (970FX) as they are not pin-compatible.

There may be some scope later on for a version with pluggable CPU boards; in this case, they would expose the ElasticIO interface and you could attach any G5 CPU to it. Theoretically :)

Yes, nice

But, when this wonderfull machine will be available ?

Of course, I think I will purchase one for Chrismas... but, the sooner it is available, the easier it will be "buyable".

And I think, I'm not alone to think like that, but we want to get the first impression about this dream machine.
