Hello,

There is a new game ported to PowerPC Linux.
I need your help to test if the game runs on all PPC hardware and Linux flavours.

You could help me a lot if you install the game demo and tell me if the game starts well and if GFX and sound play correctly.

Please go here to download the game demo (broadband needed for this)
http://www.greyhound-data.com/gunnar/robinhood
You will find Install instruction on this page.
(The final game version will install easier.)

If you test please state
a) if the game (Audio/video) fully works
b) which hardware you used
c) which Linux distribution / version you use.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Gunnar

Hi!

Good to see some games being ported to ppc!
Thanks a lot for that!
Just downloading the .run ...............................
I'll report asap :)

cheers,
frostwork

EDIT:

download is finished & game ist installed :)

The game works really good (audio&video) on my

Linux localhost 2.6.17.6-emedia #3 PREEMPT Sat Jul 22 12:54:30 CEST 2006 ppc 7447/7457, altivec supported CHRP Pegasos2 GNU/Linux

-gentoo
-Xorg 7.1
-alsa-1.0.12rc1

Looking into options my ppc is said to run with 0Mhz.
Maybe as I'm compiling some things in the backround...

It works! It works!

PegII G4 (the game reports 0MHz here also)
512M RAM
Gentoo
Kernel 2.6.17-no4
Xorg 7.1

The only problem I see is that when I exit the game, my screen resolution doesn't go back to 1280x1024. It stays at whatever the game was set to--either 800x600 or 1024x768.

When can I buy it?

It's great that Robin Hood is available for Linux PPC, but after installation KDE users will lost access to their desktop.

I have installed Robin Hood but after that I cannot log in to KDE.
There is an error message just after login screen: "could not load kdestartupconfig. Please check your installation." and nothing more, KDE stops loading at this message :(
I've tried to reinstall just KDE (sudo apt-get remove kdelibs and kubuntu-desktop and then I have installed them) but still there is the same problem....

Is there any solution for that problem? Google doesn't give any answer (only questions...)
I don't want to reinstall kubuntu :(

This isssue is related to Xorg.
I'll look into it.

The game is produced and sold buy Rune-Soft.
http://www.rune-soft.com/
You can buy it at any good Linux games shop.

It the next days (after this beta test) the PPC version will be announced.

The currently available x86 Linux game CD which you find in the stores, installs both on x86 and PPC Linux. To play the game on PPC you just need to install a 3MB PPC update. This update will be available on the Rune-Soft website in the next days.

The upcoming new Linux game CDs will install and play both on x86 and PPC.

-

If you like this game (or if you like to have games for PowerPC linux at all)
then please express this loudly!

The reality is that Linux games are no big cash cows.
The Linux game market is small. Few companies regard PPC Linux a worthwile market.
Genesi is helping here and works on getting more games ported to the PPC platform.

But at the end of the day, companies need to see that customers want PPC titles. If you like this game or any game on PPC then express this and contact the companies.

Cheers
Gunnar

This should not happen!
At least here Robin runs fine on Debian + KDE.

I'll need some more infromation about your system.
(Which Kubuntu version etc)
I'll get back to you via email.

Kubuntu Dapper (6.06).
The same problem after Robin Hood installation someone describes at Ubuntu forums:

Grxmrx,

Many thanks for reporting this issue!
You found a general issue in the Linux (x86/PPC) installer.
The installer can change a file ownership, giving problems this way.

I hope that what I told you will fix your system again.
My appologizes for the trouble.

I have improved the install instructions now.
With the new instructions the game will install correctly.

Many thanks for helping us test.
I'm learning that testing with PPC users is much more effective than testing with x86 users. :)
None of the x86 beta testers has found this issue.

Cheers
Gunnar

Ok
This is very cool. My question is before I dl the source, is the installer bug fixed? Is there a recent link to the corrected source tarball and installer for ppc? If so, i will compile and test on Debian and Ubuntu on my peg2.

1. No PPC that could be used for testing of games, working on other things.
2. Problem not in installer but in the game.

The "DO"

Make no Captives ! Kill every soldier there is.
Free Will Scarlet.
Get to the room where you can jump on the tables.
Get Little Jon to take Will on his shoulder (or wherever he wants to carry him).
Try to leave the room to the west where you killed the archer.
Will falls off of the "human ladder".
After this try to leave to the balcony with Little Jon selected ...

This gives a "Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)" !

nice to see a game being ported to ppc! Is there a chance for a 64bit version? (as in 'runs with 64 bit userland') as far as I see other games this should be a matter recompiling it.

it would make this a great game for my PowerMac G5 and the OSW when it comes out.

regards,

corsair
