Open source - feedback, from my simple world of perspective.

If the aim is to try create an even closer relationship between Linux - AIX. I think the aim is a good one.

As from my simple perspective the world in computing looks something like below:

Microsoft | All other systems

My understanding is IBM doesn't see the desktop as enough profitable.

Microsoft Windows operating system does have 120% of the desktop. No other choice exists.

Microsoft simple logic tells me - You do have Microsoft on your desktop, why have another system on the server ?

I believe if we can come to the point that Linux also is on the desktop, there is something to stand up with.

The Pegasos II - ODW is by many considered as a MicroATX desktop. It is also a very good working such. It could also become little more powerful then what it currently is. People can use the same environment on the server and on the desktop.

If we look at Ubuntu for instance, I believe they are going in the right direction. All efforts and all resources put into it is creating this. For me its not hard to understand why Ubuntu is outstanding nr 1 distro at: http://www.distrowatch.com/

The principle is - We want Your business.

Have you tried SLED - Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop. I have been trying a release candidate. And I have to say that if way better than ubuntu. I have tried several of linux distros and I have to say Ubuntu isn't bad but there are better alternatives. You have to hack ubuntu to e.g have support for mp3, flash and so on.. In Gentoo and SLED you have this from the beginning if you want. You don't have to use other peoples reposities if you are afraid to break something don't use these.

As you can se on distrowatch Suse (opensuse) is closing in. Suse has one great advantage over ubuntu and that is "Yast". It is easy and you can find everything in there what you want to do with your computer to setup things like modems and so one.

The mp3 support in SUSE comes from the bundled RealPlayer. It's nice to have it working out of the box, but I prefer XMMS To get alternative mp3 software on SUSE you need to use 3rd party packages, like from PackMan ( http://packman.links2linux.de/ ). For PPC I recompile those for the latest SUSE Linux, se the different 'packman' threads in the forum.

Yes. But they have some plugins for other media applications, which can use the RealPlayer mp3 engine. They are OK for most users, but I happen to dislike the supported players. Used WinAMP and XMMS for too long, meaning since they are available sometime in the previous century

Regarding 120%. Can be seen as an 'exaggeration'.

What Im after is that I think it might be a good benefit if possible to use the same/likely software and system in many kind of devices. Can for instance mean servers, desktop, media stations, phones ... etc..

I had SUSE as OS on a laptop several years ago. Also used it on Pegasos.

Im curios about what you mean by You need to 'hack' Ubuntu for playing of mp3 ?
