The Ubuntu kernel images I made were mentioned only here on the third page of thread, still I got some downloads. Here are the stats until now:

All together:

Server got some extra downloads, as it was ready first, but one can see, that the Desktop version is the most popular (Gunne was right ), and 'Alternate', which is my personal favorite, is the least popular.

now just a question, when using the alternate install CD, at the very end of the installation it complains about not being able to set the bootloader (yaboot), which is logical. But then the installer doesn't want to finish the install.

Ubuntu 6.06 up and running here.
Reinstalled from scratch. Dapper truly rocks.

Horror for me ! I did yesterday evening a net update/upgrade to dapper, i booted ubuntu_desktop_boot file but it was no more better thant last month when i did a try with beta release.

First problem the clock, it gains 2 hours whatever i boot from the 2 breezy kernels or ubuntu_desktop_boot one, it seems that timezone which is set to europe/paris is ignored. I do not know how about to fix this, my knowledges about linux are poor, i began to practice since last year in july on an old pc.

Second problem alsa complains many error messages when i use gedit from a shell, that was not the case when i used breezy. How to fix this ? Also the gstreamer plugins have been removed but i can certainly reinstall them.

Third problem is usb which does absolutely work. And again how do i fix this ?

I also have a problem to boot with ubuntu_desktop_boot, it did a pause yesterday evening and finished but today i was not able to boot with ubuntu_desktop_boot or ubuntu_alternate_boot, with both of them the boot does a pause nothing happend whatever i tape on my keyboard, once the computer rebooted alone but i was in an other room and did not see what happened, the second time i obtained after 1 minute a kernel panic without knowing why.

Should i better burn on a cdr the desktop or the alternate iso and boot from it to install from scratch dapper ? Otherwise one i switch back to breezy or two i try an other linux distro as esay for beginners. Because i consider that this release of ubuntu does not seem useable for pegasos or with a knowlegde more important than it should.

Did you pass kernel parameters, as described? The single most important is 'root=/dev/hdXY' where X stands for the HDD, Y for the root partition. I only had hangs during bootup, when I forgot to include the 'root' parameter. The other parameter, 'splash' makes sure, that the screen is in graphical mod during booting, and most of the confusing messaages are hidden away from the user.

I can't recall any time problems, but will check it next time I boot Ubuntu.

i'd suggest you to reinstall from scratch. Ubuntu works fine here, no problems (usb, alsa, net etc..).With the upgrade process i had half of the stuff working.
The upgrade from breezy seems to work better from a X86 version than the PPC one. An installation from scratch is always better anyway.

- The kernel panic is probably caused by not passing root argument in the boot string as czp suggest.

- Gedit, isn't that a text editor ? Is alsa really involved when gedit starts ?

- Time, dont know. No problem here.

You can install from Dapper cd's, maybe thats the best as SoundSquare writes. However I would like to give You another suggestion also. How do your sources.list looks. If you cange breezy to dapper in it, and after this do run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You will get a upto date dapper system. You can still boot this system with the breezy kernel, however I would like to suggest You to move too newer kernel. Look att czp posts above considering kernels, or the one I made concerning using the grub2 boot-loader.

Finally i did successfully install dapper alternate on my peg. It has been a little bit difficult at the end with yaboot but i reached. All the problems i encountered when i updated from breezy are bad memories. I tried first with desktop version but the installer always failed at step 5 of 6 when formatting partitions. So i sended a bug, it seems that i have certainly burned the cdr too quickly at 24x.

Colin Waston affirmed that the ubuntu team has not tested the desktop CD's installer on Pegasos, so bbrv lied when he said that genesi gave help to the ubuntu team in the release of powerpc versions of dapper drake.

Sven Luther is a hero for the Pegasos linux folks (at least he is for me ! and he's a very nice person as well). Without Sven things wouldn't have moved on so fast.

I don't get your point here, Ubuntu 6.06 is not as user friendly to install as the previous version for Pegasos users and i was one of the first ones to complain and underline it. But Genesi has always supported linux devs (for many distros) and I see nothing to complain about on this matter. As you may have noticed, the pegasos was supposed to be supported fully on this distro (check the pegasos OF menu included in the CDs) but unfortunately the boot image wasn't included. I'm sure there's a reason about it. One thing i'm almost sure about Ubuntu 6.06 is that it was released too soon. There are still some bugs left and I hope the DVD version will fix most of it and include pegasos full support.
It seems like they rushed a bit too fast too meet some deadline. Now i don't really care to know who may be responsible for it, but certainly not Genesi/bbrv.
