I've just installed Ubuntu 6.06 "Dapper" beta on my Pegasos II by upgrading my 5.10 "Breezy".

Very easy to do :

1) Check you have enough space
2) Save your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf somewhere
2) gksudo "update-manager -d"
3) Click update, then it goes (1h30 approx time)

Please be aware that using a beta version is **not bug free** ! Do not complain is some things are missing or not working !

RC2 of SUSE Linux 10.1 just appeared, and it should not have any problems with updating. At least, according to the announcement. But there were no reports on the mailing lists, saying that upgrade is problematic, so it should work now

I just did a update to dapper but there is one big problem. It doesn't generate a new vmlinuz image file. How do I do that ? I have tried mkvmlinuz but that fails.

same issue as micken. I booted on my old kernel but i got no USB support anymore. I had a few errors during the upgrade though.

Yes, that is unforntunately a big problem. The linux kernel 2.6.16 has gone through some major changes in the file structure for powerpc which prevents mkvmlinuz from working out of the box. I'm sure there are work being done to be able to use mkvmlinuz with kernels 2.6.16+, Sven can probably answer that better. Debian has the same problem but they are not using the 2.6.16 kernel yet so. (Yes, Ubuntu has a 2.6.15 kernel, but is has taken a lot of patches from the 2.6.16 kernel, including the changes for powerpc.)

I tried to use the object files from a vanilla 2.6.15 kernel from kernel.org but it didn't work with the default kernel in Ubuntu anyway. The problem was that the kernel became to big, I tried to recompile the Ubuntu kernel with some modules removed and it worked. But as soon as I added them again the kernel was unbootable.

I then talked to Sven about the to big kernel proble and he gave me some suggestions about how to make a big kernel boot in the firmware on the Pegasos, but it didn't work for me.

So, what I'm doing now is to use GRUB2. A binary which works on the Pegasos can be found at http://www.blastware.org/grub2/index.html

Just copy the files to your boot partition. You then need to edit the file grub.cfg, mine looks like:
My root is /dev/hda6 so the harddrive number is the same as in OF.

Then in OF I boot the system with: The prefix is neccesary for GRUB2 to automatically find the config file. If you do not specify the prefix you will get a prompt in GRUB2. It is also possible to load the configfile from inside the GRUB2 prompt with:
But it's better to have the menu shown automatically

You of also cource need to change (hd,5) and h:5 to the number of your partition.

OK, I also have a problem now with this Ubuntu version.

Since I've launched "E-Gnome", Enlightenment seems to be launched each time even when I select "KDE", "Xfce" or "GNOME".
The pb is that with GNOME or Xfce the UI is freezed when I log in.
I can only use the KDE session :/
I didn't have time to check what was wrong but maybe I'm not the only one to have this problem ?

yeah... well next time don't tell everyone that it's cool to update untill u have fully tested it yourself hehe
now my Ubuntu is fucked up, i'll wait for the final release to reinstall from scratch.

I may have another problem with Ubuntu Dapper.

Since I've used GParted and tried to change a partition FS and resize it, I can't resize any partition of the disk any more (with gparted or parted).

In french :
"Pas d'implementation. Le système de fichiers ext2 a une étrange disposition.
Parted ne sait (pour l'instant) pas le redimensionner"

In english :
"No implementation. The ext2 filesystem has a strange layout.
Parted does not know (yet) how to resize it"

Am I the only one to have this problem with Dapper PPC ?

Since the begining of this month and after receiving breezy ubunbu cd from shipit i installed it. Then i saw from geoffrey the thread about dapper and i wanted to try. First problem, i downloaded an iso, burned it and then wanted to boot from the cd but it was not possible because the file vmilinuz-chrp.initrd is missing in the directory install/powerpc. This is strange i think because in install directory there text files and among them a pegasos one. I do not know how it is written, perl or python, but inside it says what is necessary to use with on pegasos computer and boot upon. So why does this important file miss ? If it is not possible to boot a dapper cd i will have to do it from a breezy one and then do the update as indicated by Geoffrey and on ubuntu.com, but i will loose one hour half until it finishes and i will not be able to boot from dapper kernel because no vmlinuz-2.6.15-20/21-powerpc one will be present in boot directory. I tryed with vmlinux file but the boot freezed. Now, i decided to reinstall breezy and to live with until stable dapper drake distribution arrives and that problems encountered with beta dapper have been fixed.

A RC is now available.
If you have a fast connexion, use update as mentionned previously to avoid missing boot image problem.
Anyway, if you still have problems with this beta version and cannot solve them you'd better wait an official release before trying again

still the same issue with 6.06 RC1, the boot image for Pegasos is missing on the install CD and the online upgrade doesn't generate the vmlinuz. Now as Ubuntu 6.06 final is supposed to be ready for 1st of June i truly wonder if they gave up about Pegasos support on this new version.

I guess that this problem should be reported somewhere.
Personaly, with upgrade version it works again here with all the latest packages.
