I got Xgl working on Pegasos with SUSE Linux 10.1 beta5 (which will be announced officially this evening). It's still a bit buggy, but looks very nice.
Xgl info is available at http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl
It's not included on the CDs, and is not officially supported, but binaries are provided in 'factory' (http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version#Downloads).
In addition, what is documented on the Xgl website, some additional changes are needed in xorg.conf: loading the DRI module and enabling the composite extension.

Hi, Peter!
Looks very promising!
(at least we don't have to wait for Java3D-1.5 for ppc to get lookingglass to work ;) ).
Is there any chance to get a cvs-snapshot from the sources?
Unfortunately I can't cvs from here (netcafe...)

cheers,
Marcel

As frostwork I'm interested by CVS sources if possible...
I would like to have a try to it with my linux distrib (Ubuntu)...

I hope, that you can extract files from source rpm files. If you have rpm installed and have mc, then it's just hit enter and use F5 to extract sources ;-)

http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/opensuse/d ... -2.src.rpm

http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/opensuse/d ... -2.src.rpm

If you have trouble with it, I can help by making a CVS snapshot of Xgl available, but I can't find CVS sources for compis (the window manager replacement).

A note about speed: I was at FOSDEM during the weekend, and there was a demonstration of Xgl at the openSUSE desk. It ran very smoothly, but they used very high end hardware with binary only nVidia 3D drivers. On a Pegasos it has a slower response, especially when jerking a larger window, but other way it works nicely.

EDIT:

Mmmh, wasn't so hard to find ;)

Thanks a lot!

Tested today on SUSE Linux 10.1 beta6. Some bugs are still present, but the overall performance seems to be better now.

Hi frostwork !

Did you manage to compile Xgl on Debian ?

I would like to make it work under my Ubuntu with my Englightenment e17 ;-)
I've just downloaded the sources and don't know yet what to do with these...
There are many files, a README but not much inside execpt what is xgl...

But I've found a tutorial here (for x86 I suppose)...
That might help a bit...
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=116371

So I've just started with "glitz"...

I think I am going to try to compile XGL for Gentoo next weekend. I've been keeping a close eye on the XGL threads on the Gentoo forums in it seems that most of the problems with ATI cards are solved or close to solved.

I can't wait until it is. E17 does some nice tricks now. It'll be interesting to see what the e17 team will have to contribute to the cause.

i managed to get xgl running on my Pegasos following this tutorial : http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/17174.html

I can rotate the screens and some other stuff and it's running suprisingly smooth with my radeon 8500LE.
BUT: the mouse pointer moves, but nothing happens when i click on an item (icon or menu), if i rotate to switch to another screen then i can see that the actions i tried with the mouse worked (the icons launch programs, the menu is opened etc...) but i can't see it until i rotate to another screen. The mouse is like working in "blind" mode. I can't drag or resize an opened window or anything. This issue is hard to describe sorry. Let's say that the mouse pointer has no effect on the screen untill i scroll the screens.
any idea or any similar experience ?

edit : i used Suse 10.1 rc3

Xgl is severly broken now on SUSE 10.1 PPC. It worked fine around beta3 with just two minor bugs it was quite usable. But it was continuosly developed and fixed in the past month during the SUSE test period, and now it almost does not work at all.

The problem is, that the main development targets are x86 machines with binary only ATI, Intel and Nvidia 3D video drivers. OSS X.org 3D is not officially supported. Xgl is developed by Novell/SuSE with their next generation corporate desktop Linux in mind, and there these three dominate, and a binary driver is not considered evil

The good news is, that the lead developer has plans to fix it when has some time and access to PPC. I think, it will come after their Linux Desktop offering is released...

BTW: my experiences are described at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=165794 , you are also very welcome to use the SuSE bugzilla!
