Hi !

I remember having seen a Pegasos laptop built by a user. Was it a joke ? Was it really working ?
I don't have the link anymore...

And what about a Pegasos laptop built by Genesi ?

We should probably be thinking real hard about a Pegasos laptop - mobile, low power, low temperature, maybe even low frequency to get things started - all based on open source software -- a super blackberry of sorts. There is still plenty of life in the 32bit space and convention seems to forget that the G4 contributes the most to Apple's computer sales at a rate of roughly 5:1 to the G5. It is true, that people do still want G5 performance (as in watts/cycle) in a laptop. We need an SoC and a joint venture with ATI or nVidea to do it. We are working on that.
So what's the status about this now ? I guess EFIKA board is the main work ATM, so I just want to know if it is still in Genesi's projects (or not) ?
Or maybe a laptop with an EFIKA board ?

I think that many Pegasos owners would be interested by that.

Of course it was working - it had been just a bit unhandy. Here is the link. I sold it later, though, and donated the money to AROS - most of it to initiate the GTK2-MUI wrapper and the MorphOS wrapper bounties. (The latter is still open, by the way.)

Martin, please sign up for an EFIKA Project if you are willing to make another laptop with the new board!

R&B :)

@Senex : that's just really funny !
It's really a geek machine. I love that ;-)
I've also seen that you made one with an A1200 !
Too bad that I don't read German.
I'm going to use Google trans to have a bit of explanation about it ;-)

Have you ever thought of making a Pegasos laptop from an old PC ATX laptop ?

No, that's a misunderstanding - I did neither produce the one nor the other. That's the work of Volker 'Dr.Zarkov' Mohr.

I wonder if Efika has so light requests in consuming electricity, so it could be applied standard laptop batteries to power it on, and if these batteries could keep it working for almost 2 hours (or more) continuously...

Maybe a very strong couple of batteries could power it...

... Or, I have also the alternative idea it could be powered by an expensive fuel cell battery.

This device sure will power it well, but then it will cost too much indeed.

What, do you really think that an Efika will consume *more* power than the standard high power x86 laptop motherboards/CPU's we see today?

thats what i was thinking of doing, making a laptop out of an efika. Ive drawn up some prelim plans but it all really depends on the final size clearance of the efika.

EDIT; added efika laptop project to the submission list

Well, Intel mobile machines CPUs could reduce power consumptions during moments in which is not required heavy stress usage.
I don't know if MPC5200B could perform the same.

It seems to me that next to come MPC 8641 CPU could do that such as Itel CPUs.

Then take a look at consumes:

MPC 5200B consumes standard 2 watts/hour at quite normal usage.

It has been stated into Efika II thread that graphical card XGI consumes 10 watt/hour at normal 2D usage (it consumes more when 3D is active and running).

So we must now discover how much do consume these components:

1) LCD LVDS screen

2) hard disk

3) CD-RW or DVD-RW ultraslim device

4) Human interface devices (keyboard and mouse)

Then we must made the sum of standard power consumes for all these devices tied together.

Think also we must realize a good power and maintenance software to activate their power-off features after a certain amount of inactivity...
(realize the software if Efika could had MorpHOS running on it, and adjust fine Linux power saving features, when linux is used on Efika as main OS)

Then (and only then) we will discover what model of battery for laptop use is suitable to build our Efika Laptop.

I made just some calculation in my mind and I think IMHO that 1 or 2 (at least) 2700 mAh laptop power batteries could perform the task of giving us a good price/time/weight of the laptop/performance ratio, with Efika running for 1 or 2 hours of continuous work without plugging the power cable.

I hope some technician of your level could calculate better than me the power we need to create a good Pegasos-Efika laptop.

If 2700 mAh are not enough, then on the market are available also 3600 and 4000 mAh (and more?) batteries models, but then the weight of the laptop will grow up noteworthy.

@ Raffaele

AFAIK, the 5200 consumes a little above 1W. And that is an entire System on a Chip (well not quite, but almost). That is actually quite amazing if you ask me. I don't think the XGI chip and FPGA together consumes more than the standard set of high power ATI/Nvidia gfx chip and other system controllers used by x86 laptop motherboards, rather the opposite. Now take an average x86 laptop with its high power x86 CPU, on board controllers and graphics, remove it, and put in the Efika into the identical envireonment of HDD, CD/DVD, screen and battery (just replace the x86 guts with the Efika, everything else "ceteris paribus"), and I am pretty sure it will run *for hours* longer ...

Hi.

Well, we are working on this one:
http://projects.ppczone.org/projects.php?project=60

Maybe this can be expanded on to make it a laptop for general use, even though the focus right now is on children.
Battery power is no problem :-)

Best regards,
Johan

You start to sound as if the 4U2 had been cancelled already.
Maybe someone can shed some light on this, considering is was announced to be a Q2 2006 product...?

Not cancelled at all. In fact, once the EFIKA became the mobileGT reference platform and XGI turned over their 2D and 3D sources the project took on a whole new meaning. We hope to show something at FTF.
