I know, it has been a while since the first public release of niktarix. Unfortunately real life obligations and projects that supported me and my family took a lot of time out of niktarix. I hope that this can change in the future as I really like to work on niktarix.
I have been working on 0.04 since august from time to time and a few days ago I managed to finish it. Here is the result of that work. The most important changes in this release are:

*Synched with knoppix 4.0.2
*Now niktarix boots with command "boot cd niktarix" (without quotes) from the OF prompt
*Unionfs loads normally on bootup
*Amiga filesystem is supported (read only). Fstype.sh patch from kano, rest me.
*Mounting USB sticks should now work
*KDE 3.4.3
*Openoffice 2.0
*Kernel 2.6.14
*X.org. Backport from kanotix
*Firefox Browser
*Lot of small changes/fixes I can't remember
*Packages upgrade

Known issues:
dhcp does not work from within the the knoppix netcardconfig util. Pump does not bring the interface up (bug?). Use dhclient instead

Again this release does NOT support mac computers. Please do not mail me about it as I really can not help you since I have no mac hardware to build or test niktarix on.
With a littlee help maybe the next version will.
So what will it take for niktarix to work on mac pc's?
Not that much really. But someone has to:

Build a kernel for mac (keep in mind that the configuration should be as general as possible as the kernel should run on a variety of hardware)
Build the unionfs module (version 1.1.12)
Make the kernel bootable for mac (you will need the ramdisk from niktarix to do that, email me so I can send it to you)
Make an iso so that mac computers can boot from it.
Test the .iso to verify that it can boot. You will know that everything is OK when you get an error message saying that the knoppix filesystem can not be found.
As soon as this is done send me the kernel and the unionfs .deb (along with some other module .deb's I will tell you about when the time comes) so I create a new iso that supports mac pc s for further public testing
An other solution would be to donate me a mac :)

The installer: There is none. I decided to wait as a new installer is planned for the next knoppix version. This together with some other magor changes are excpected to happen in knoppix in the next few months.

You will find the niktarix .iso at
http://www.ellak.gr/pub/knoppel/niktarix-0.04.iso
and the md5sum file at
http://www.ellak.gr/pub/knoppel/niktarix-0.04.md5sum
Many thanks to the guys at ellak.gr for hosting the niktarix .iso on their servers.
I hope that I 'll find the time soon to put up a website for niktarix

Have fun
Nick

Hi,
as Niktarix is my absolute favourite CD, I'd like to ask, whether there's any later version ?

Wow - that iso weighs in at over 600MB. How compressable is it? Or is it already full of pre-compressed software packages?

Hi all,

Still alive.
It's been a tough summer this year as the company I worked for went bankrupt leaving me and the rest of my colleges suddenly without a job.
As my first priority is to provide for my family I founded a company with a friend I worked with.
So at this point in my life, I have put all my time and energy in this little company in the hope that my family and me can make a decent living.
As much as I like working on niktarix, knoppel and some other FOSS projects I can t afford doing so at this time since none of these project can pay the bills.
So I will we back and I will start working on niktarix etc.
just give me some time

Thanks
Nick

Well I got around to trying to boot the burned iso from a usb cd/dvd drive on my Efika at long last and, as mentioned in the "Mac"-related section of the original post it shows the filesystem error message. Knoppix is one of the few Linux distros I can stand for long periods of time, so I am very much looking forward to seeing how this project progresses.
Hope it all goes well for you, too.

ok boot cd niktarix

Starts loading. Then it comes to a search for Niktarix filesystem in a Knoppix screen and can't find it.
What am I missing?
