This week I received my Efika MX nettop, unfortunately all I get from it is a black screen, in addition to the installed version of Maverick I tried the october release, armhf+3d, Android and William Schaub's headless Maverick, http://steubentech.com/~talon/Efika-MX/ ... /maverick/. Upon booting any of these, the backlight of my display is turned on and then it goes to sleep, pressing the display's menu button, to prevent it from going to sleep, doesn't help, neither does plugging in the cable while the machine is booting. The headless Maverick did allow me to get a dmesg and the EDID file, by logging in remotely via ssh, I don't have the debug board, hopefully these two will help diagnose and solve the problem.

Frank.

My monitor is a NEC MultiSync EA191M, a 1280x1024 pva panel,
here is the parsed EDID file:

Today I gave Gentoo (gentoo-stage3-armv7a-20101216) a try and it appears to get a little further than the headless Maverick, it does support a 1280x1024 modeline, SIIHDMI even puts an asterix at the start of it, I have no idea what that means though, then it selects a 1280x720 modeline and I am left with a black screen.
How do I make it choose the 1280x1024 modeline and will that make any difference?

For what it's worth here is the dmesg of gentoo-stage3-armv7a-20101216

Today I gave Gentoo (gentoo-stage3-armv7a-20101216) a try and it appears to get a little further than the headless Maverick, it does support a 1280x1024 modeline, SIIHDMI even puts an asterix at the start of it, I have no idea what that means though, then it selects a 1280x720 modeline and I am left with a black screen.
How do I make it choose the 1280x1024 modeline and will that make any difference?
It might, the easiest way is to add "siihdmi.seventwenty=0 siihdmi.teneighty=0" to your boot.script which will try and use a more traditional mode selection (i.e. closest to prefered) rather than trying to keep it close to 720p.

The asterisk means that it is the display's preferred mode, by the way (native panel resolution). The only reason we don't pick that mode by default is because somewhere above 1366x768 (including 1280x1024) the IPU driver can lock under heavy bandwidth, when doing multimedia etc.

I would really recommend using the latest kernel though. That's Gentoo and you're already using a version past the releases we did for Maverick, so you are obviously capable of compiling it yourself - go to github.com/genesi/linux-legacy and grab that and see what you get out of it. The development version is a little less flakey with displays but not totally working (or we'd have released it already).

Thanks for your reply Matt. I didn't compile it myself, I got it from http://dev.gentoo.org/~darkside/arm/efi ... nstall.xml (the link is on the front page of powerdeveloper.org, under Gentoo), loaded it onto an SD-card and booted from it, then halted the machine by pushing the powerbutton for 5 seconds, on another machine I retrieved dmesg and other logs from the card. All a bit less sophisticated than it may have appeared. Still your reply got me thinking, if it is just the kernel I need to compile I may give it a try, I found some usefull comments, by Marcin Juszkiewicz:
http://marcin.juszkiewicz.com.pl/2010/0 ... compilers/
http://marcin.juszkiewicz.com.pl/2010/0 ... rs-part-2/
http://marcin.juszkiewicz.com.pl/2010/1 ... ntu-10-10/
And Debian's Efika MX page may also be usefull:
http://wiki.debian.org/EfikaMX
What I did not find was a complete recipe for compiling and installing the legacy kernel, is there such a thing somewhere? The above links don't answer all my questions. Should I compile it on the Efika using the headless maverick (which is running fine) or should I cross compile it on an x86_64 maverick (running under KVM on Debian)? What about dependencies? Which gcc version do I need? Is creating the configuration file really as easy as on Debian's page? And there are probably more things that I haven't even thought of.

Hope you, or anyone, can help me on my way,
Frank.

Hi Frank,

The following assumes a cross compiler is installed on an x86 Ubuntu system.

You will need:

apt-get install debhelper kernel-package fakeroot binutils-multiarch

Then run something like:

cp arch/arm/configs/mx51_efikamx_defconfig .config
make-kpkg --revision 2011.06 --arch armel --cross-compile arm-linux-gnueabi- --subarch efikamx --us --uc --rootcmd=fakeroot --jobs=2 --initrd TARGET

You can change revision to anything you like.

--arch and --subarch are important.
--initrd is essential. --us and --uc will compile with unchecked ("maintainer mode") and unsigned (i.e. no GPG required) build which means we don't need to go and get ourselves keys.
--cross-compile may not be required at all but some versions of make-kpkg aren't smart.
--rootcmd=fakeroot provides how to gain root acces (normally sudo or fakeroot)
--jobs=2 tells it to use multiple jobs to compile the kernel
TARGET is the output from make-kpkg --targets which is probably going to be best to be "kernel_image" (just linux-image-*.deb), "binary-arch" (linux-image, linux-headers and linux-image_dbg) or "binary" (full suite of packages).

Johan.

I have a gentoo kernel you can attempt to use, the tarball is in my dev space, http://dev.gnetoo.org/~steev/files/2.6. ... mx.tar.bz2 Extract it, and put the files in their proper places. (/boot files go into /boot, /lib/* in /lib/ )

These all assume you have the system running on the internal pata device. If you are running off sdcard, you will need to edit the boot.script file, and assuming u-boot-tools are installed, you just run mkimage -A arm -T script -C none -d /boot/boot.script /boot/boot.scr (as root)

This is running the latest code, although I have commented out a few different comments that would always show up in dmesg.

I compiled the latest legacy kernel, but then used steev's. I copied it to the internal disk, after renaming files and directories that were to be replaced, added siihdm.teneighty=0 siihdmi.seventwenty=0 to boot.script, ran mkimage and booted the new system. Now it does indeed select a 1280x1024@60 mode but, still no display, most of the time. If I plug in the monitor cable while the machine is booting, I get the display working once every ten tries or so but, only in 640x480@59 mode, it selects that mode itself.

I always get this error, in dmesg, whether the display works or not:
mxc_ipu mxc_ipu: IPU Error - IPU_INT_STAT_10 = 0x00080000
and that's right after this:
SIIHDMI: selected configuration:
SIIHDMI: * "1280x1024@60" 108.03 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
IPU DMFC DP HIGH RESOLUTION: 1(0,1), 5B(2~5), 5F(6,7)
If and only if the display does work then further down in dmesg you will see this:
SIIHDMI: selected configuration:
SIIHDMI: "640x480@59" 25.175 640 656 752 800 480 492 494 527 -hsync -vsync

I think I picked the relevant messages but I have no idea what to make of it or what to do about it.

Hope you can make use of it and help me get my monitor to work,
Frank.

I forgot to mention that when the display does work in 640x480 mode, I first get a black screen and after a short while it presents GDM, before that there are no messages and there is no fancy boot screen, just once, for a fraction of a second, did I see the Genesi logo.

I have a gentoo kernel you can attempt to use, the tarball is in my dev space, http://dev.gnetoo.org/~steev/files/2.6. ... mx.tar.bz2...
The correct URL is:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~steev/files/2.6. ... mx.tar.bz2

"gnetoo" and the version incremented. Probably safest to view the folder at: http://dev.gentoo.org/~steev/files/

After jlpoole's remark I checked steev's Gentoo directory, he has updated the kernel so, I gave it another trie, same result though.

The new kernel does select a 1280x1024@60 mode but, usually no display. If I plug in the monitor cable while the machine is booting, I get the display working once every ten tries or so but, only in 640x480@59 mode and even then I don't see a boot splash nor any messages only GDM and X.

When SIIHDMI is configuring I always get these messages:
SIIHDMI: selected configuration:
SIIHDMI: * "1280x1024@60" 108.03 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
IPU DMFC DP HIGH RESOLUTION: 1(0,1), 5B(2~5), 5F(6,7)
mxc_ipu mxc_ipu: IPU Error - IPU_INT_STAT_10 = 0x00080000

I had a look at the source code and as far as I can figure out the IPU sends an interrupt with error code
0x00080000, what does that code mean, is the modeline wrong or is it something else?

I hooked up the display (NEC MultiSync EA191M) to another machine, via vga (the monitor has both vga and dvi-d), and checked Xorg's log, it uses the same modeline, also the EDID in the log is identical to the first half of the EDID I retrieved from the Efika MX, except for the checksum. Everything should work unless the EDID is almost correct and the error doesn't matter for vga and does matter for dvi-d. The Xorg log did show one (DDC gathered) modeline that differs slightly from the one used:
"1280x1024"x59.9 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync (63.7 kHz).

What do I make of this and what does IPU_INT_STAT_10 = 0x00080000 mean?

Hi.

Please try the kernel here and see if that changes anything:

http://193.239.210.15/~johan/efikamx/li ... _armel.deb

With this kernel, also try the options "siihdmi.seventwenty=0" and "siihdmi.teneighty=0" to your boot.script

Johan.

Hello all,

Steev and Johan thanks for your kernels, for taking the time to help me solve my display problem, unfortunately it didn't help much, so, as a last resort, I bought a different HDMI to DVI cable, and that did work, I'm looking at a near perfect screen now with beautifull colors (I added "video=mxcdi0fb:bpp=32 siihdmi.teneighty=0 siihdmi.seventwenty=0" to the bootargs). The Efika can even wake the display and put it to sleep. The first cable was by a company named Deltac and the one that does work is made by ICIDU.
Both the vanilla 26 kernel (October release) and the 27 kernel work with my display (NEC MultiSync EA191M) and the new cable however, somewhere the screen is scaled down from 1280x1024 to 1280x1023 resulting in some fuzziness, especially noticeable on the console.

When booting SIIHDMI selects this modeline:
"1280x1024@60" 108.03 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync

Xorg uses this one:
"current"x0.0 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync -csync (64.0 kHz)

This is the output from:
xrandr --verbose
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1280 x 1024, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024

My display's OSD says:
1280x1023
H 64.2kHz V 60.2Hz

I searched the web a bit and this problem appears to be similar to another one:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=478196
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13968
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15370

I tried to solve this problem by adding "siihdmi.force_dvi=1" to the bootargs, that didn't do anything, neither does removing "video=mxcdi0fb:bpp=32".
I tried setting different modes with xrandr but, it refuses to change anything, what does work, as a workaround is:
fbset -yres 1025
That does produce a perfect picture, albeit a temporary one.

Hopefully someone knows what is to blame here and how to solve it.

Frank.
