Would it be possible to make Boxee run on an Efika MX Smarttop (with all the proper acceleration of course)?

That would be so cool! :-)

Doesn't look like XBMC (which Boxee is based on) supports ARM very well. There's a thread on the Efika MX on XBMC's forum here with an indefinite answer:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=96002
But as I understand it, XBMC on ARM is very much a work in progress. Also, XBMC uses ffmpeg as its video decoding library which, as far as I know, isn't capable of utilizing the i.MX5-series' hardware video decoding engine.

Would definitely be cool though! But it seems some work is still needed.

Thanks for this info! :-)

IMHO this would be worth looking into, since it would bring a whole new area of usage/business, a whole new "reason to exist" for the Efika MX Smarttop.

D-link has a cool Atom-based Boxee Box, which I believe *is selling really well*:

If a properly HW-accelerated i.MX51/53 could do the job, it would mean some business! :-)

I'm discusssing with freescale about implementing libvpu support directly in libav (thus enabling everything from chrome to xbmc to use the hw accel codecs if present).

Hopefully I'll get back from them the documentation I asked and something will appear =)

That would be really great. The Efika MX Smarttop is a perfect match IMHO, and it will be even more so when the i.MX53 starts to ship!

Wow, that would be truly great! I really hope that will work out! Keep us posted! :-)

I've long wondered what the "proper" way of getting universal HW acceleration on these types of machines is. Gstreamer is one thing, and that's nice to have, but all the ffmpeg/libav-using programs are still missing (I adore mplayer! :))
If you were to integrate libvpu support in mainline libav, would that simply mean that as soon as this is merged, any programs (mplayer(2), Chrome etc.) that are compiled with this, and run on an i.MX51/3 system will automatically detect the HW decoding ability and utilize it?
