First, for those of you who don't know Skolelinux/Debian-Edu, I'll just redirect to http://www.skolelinux.org and mention that it's a Debian based, school targetted distribution. It's been awarded with "the Linux New Media Award for Best Newcomer Linux Distribution 2004".

So, initially the distro was x86-centric but thanks to Genesi, who donated ODWs to some core Skolelinux developers (incl. Finn-Arne Johansen from Norway) and contributors to the project (such as Kurt Gramlich from Germany and myself), an initial port to PowerPC has already started, though it still needs work and testing.

For this purpose, and in order to have a more complete support for PowerPC, all the Pegasos I motherboards have been sent to build a Skolelinux test-lab, the 1st fully on PowerPC. A Pegasos II will act as a server (using lessdisks instead of LTSP, as LTSP is too x86-specific in some points) and the Pegasos I systems will act as diskless thinclients, rebuilt from the donated motherboards. It's very important to note that the whole lab (~9-10 systems) will probably consume less power than the P4 server we use in another Skolelinux installation :-)

We expect to have pretty shortly a full operating test lab of Skolelinux/Debian-Edu for PowerPC running Pegasos. You can be sure we'll have plenty of photographs to show, reports, howtos and results. We're very excited that we can use our preferred platform with our preferred school distribution!!

Also, with the imminent arrival of the EFIKA board, it's a no-brainer to consider a full integrated solution for schools, based on a Peg 2 for a server and some EFIKAs as the the thinclients. Having seen the EFIKA in action, I can definately say that it's more than up for the job!!

We'll keep you posted with anything new on this subject...

Konstantinos
