Hi, this is great. Just to keep everyone posted on this:
1. We are shipping an ODW to Matthias Frühauf of the spicy SuSE Linux PPC Team ASAP.
2. We have started some discussions with Novell about the Linux PPC Desktop and how this could be involved with
www.power.org
3. We have re-energized interest at IBM after this announcement:
Genesi Press Release, 30 August
This also ties back to
www.power.org
=> Our feeling is that the PowerPC marketing message to the world is in chaos after the Apple announcement. With Novell and the members of Power.org we can start to fix that.
What is the markerting moniker? We eat our own dogfood! We are using a Linux PowerPC desktop!
After all we have been talking about it for a while:
Avalanche
IBM
Freescale
We think that without Apple using PowerPC it will be increasingly difficult to sell PowerPC servers or even clusters when there are no broadly used PowerPC desktops that people can use to do things like even just playback a video. That may sound ridiculous, but it is true. We have tried to hammer this same basic point home to IBM in the past and gave up to focus on Freescale. At the time, IBM's official corporate policy was to not displace Windows on the desktop. With SUSE working on PowerPC it may be a whole new ballgame with IBM no longer in the "PC" business. We will strongly support this.
The PowerPC message seems to be coming together with the 32 and 64-bit kernel merger and indications that Freescale may join Power.org too. We hope IBM understands how important having Freescale involved is, after all these years Freescale is really the only one left subscribing to the original ideas of AIM...
Oh yeah, we added OpenSUSE here:
