In my case, I use an USB IDE adapter, like this one.

If i understand correctly:
An usb sd card reader will be recognized as an usb cdrom? Is that bad or good? Or is that for the synchrotech device?
Yes. Synchrotech are talking about PC BIOS when they say it is not bootable.

That's good for you. It will appear as a USB removable mass storage media device - the same kind as a USB key.

The ATAPI adapters will appear as a standard ATA/ATAPI device (like a CD or Zip drive).

So, is a dual compact flash adaptor going to work?

Something like this:

I'm thinking about putting system on one CF (master), and swap on the other (smaller, slave CF). This way if the swap card starts to malfunction I can easily replace it.

Well, if the MPC5200B's disk controller really knows how to deal with a master/slave setup, then why not...

That's the point of my question. Does it?

It does and that adapter works fine. The fact that it connects directly to the PATA L connector with no cable is the reason it does work.

However you MAY have some slight mechnical clearance issues with some of them.. by 1mm or so. It depends which batch, which model, which manufacturer, but electrically and as far as ATA protocols go, yes it works.
