Hello

I need a machine to run an icecast server to broadcast a radio from it. I'm thinking of the efikaMX for power saving reasons mainly.

I need an advice from those having an efikaMX already.

- is there an ARM package of icecast or will i need to compile it ?
- is the usb2 on efikaMX enough powered for an external 2,5 usb hd (that will host the audio files) ?

I may consider purchasing one if it fits my (basic) needs

thx

edit : sorry i forgot to indicate that i plan to use debian/ubuntu. But i'm not against using another distribution (especially if Gentoo is available)

Both Debian an Ubuntu have these packages:
Code:
icecast-server - MPEG Layer III Streaming Server
icecast2 - Ogg Vorbis and MP3 streaming media server

Tested with the netbook kit, it works fine. My audio collection is also on a 2.5" USB HDD. Sometimes audio out was not perfect, when the USB HDD worked heavily. I'll test EfikaMX later today...

BTW: the headphones out is one of the best I have ever heard. It is definitely better, than my (quite expensive) JVC hifi has :)

EfikaMX tested: it works fine both with an ancient Hitachi 80GB drive and a new 500GB Toshiba "Store ART" drive. Both are 2.5" HDDs on USB.

Hi.

Confirmed here. 2.5" on USB works fine.
Icecast should work fine, I made a set-up like that with the original Efika some years ago.

Best regards,
Johan

openSUSE is still not fully ported. The base compiler environment runs fine in a chroot on my EfikaMX, but many openSUSE 11.2 packages are still being fixed to be able to get compiled on ARM.

it seems my efikaMX is blocked at the customs for now :-(
it was scheduled for a delivering on monday but now Fedex doesn't give a date anymore. It has been blocked at the customs since friday.

edit : it seems it's being presented at my door today with its lovely 60euros fee...

some news.

Unfortunately it seems the efikamx won't be of great help in this project.

My first intention was to use it as an icecast/shoutcast server, but my poor internet connection doesn't have enough upload ressources to broadcast so i switched to an hosted server.

The second option was to use the efikamx to play the audio files and stream it to the server. Unfortunately, no linux software is convenient enough to do it and doesn't offer the flexibility that the couple Winamp/shoutcast plugin offers (nor reliability). Unless you like editing playlists in text mode for hours and sacrifice dynamic, real time playlist editing. (I didn't find an icecast or shoutcast plugin for Audacious or xmms.) So i picked up an Atom eeeBox and use it in this purpose.

So the radio is ready, online and playing :

www.elfm-radio.com

but the efikamx isn't involved in it at all. I'll think of another use to it. Maybe i'll find a more suited software and will use the efikamx again in this project.

I just found, that Audacious 2.2 has an icecast output plugin, so streaming from EFIKA MX should be easy if you have the same package for Ubuntu/Debian.

thanks Peter for pointing it out.
I compiled audacious and the plugins from the sources successfuly on ubuntu/efikamx but audacious keeps crashing when i enable the plugin. So i may wait for Opensuse to be ready on the efikamx to try it again.
I hope i can get rid of the noisy eeeBox soon ;-)
