Due to the large number of request, SuSE is making a PPC release of their next version of Linux. openSUSE 10.0 beta3 for PPC just appeared on mirrors. The hardware compatibitly list does not say a word about Pegasos, so I'm asking anyone with some spare time to test it, and provide feedback to SuSE, and if it does not work, then help them to fix it.

Documentation is available at http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/PowerPC_Documentation, and it can be downloaded from http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Download.

To see, if it works, it's enough to download the first CD, and then try to boot it. If it boots, you can check, which hardware is found, which not. Even for a minimum install (no games, no Office, no other languages), the first CD should be enough.

Do you mean, that it works on Pegasos, or that the first 100MB is downloaded?

Hi :)

Haha!

Installation works without any modifications!!!!

Simply type in OF:

boot cd suseboot/inst32 minmemory=0 MemYastText=0 sysrq=1

Installation works like a charm, but it doesn't use Xorg here but simple
terminal (maybe as I only have 256 MB RAM).

Preconfigured partitioning is a bit weird, so I chose manual settings.

It also wants to format a /boot partition, but I think you can use your own later.

Aftere installation you still need a peg-compatible kernel, but i guess any
will do. Didn't boot into it yet as I wanted to tell you that it works as fast as
possible :)

I think the OpenSuse team should get the SmartCard-Reader, eh ;)

cheers
frostwork

edit: Fixed typo in the boot-params + 2nd iso downloaded ;)

You are a winner!

We were already shipping you an ODW this coming week on the account of your GameCD now available for download here on the site (left column, under "Downloads" - CGDA GameCD). Now, we will be including in a Smart Card bundle in the shipment as well! :-)

Congratulations Frostwork!

Please keep us posted on how the rest of the installation goes.

R&B :-)

Hi!

Yes! You really simply need a peg-compatible kernel and the system boots
to finish installation. (Of course I skipped cds 3-5).
Everything is configured correctly and works as it should :)

I only tested with reiserfs as filesystem, but I think the others should also work.

mini-"howto":

-boot your 1st SuseCD with the above parameters
- you'll be guided through installation-process
- when install of 1st cd finished, your peg will reboot
- now copy the kernel-modules of your kernel under /lib/modules/"kernelversion" of your new system
- copy your kernel to your boot-hd (if it isn't already there)
(if you chose reiserfs make sure it is compiled into your kernel -
as with every other used fs of course)
- in OF a usual linux-boot parameter-path is everything needed:
boot "SuseKernel" root=/dev/your-chosen-hd (additional-things you want to use like video=XXX)

- suse should boot now with your kernel and finish installation...

cheers

Hehe, thanks a lot, ironfist!
(I was probably simply the only one being weird enough
to check the already included kernel ;) )

cheers
frostwork
