Hi,

since I have to buy a new gaphics card for my Peg2 (new case -> full height slot -> perhaps not loosing a PCI slot for that VGA adapter) I thought of using a Radeon 9600. So I could test the r300 drivers on PPC :-). But I'm completely baffled thanks to the different advertisments of the internet shops.

The Pegasos has a 3.3V AGP slot, so any AGP 1x/2x card should work. But it is almost impossible to get such cards. But I've also seen some cards where they say the card is compatible to 2x/4x/8x. That would mean the card works with 0.8V - 3.3V. Is that true?

Are the newer AGP card all downwards compatbile or are that only some special cards?

OK, short: which passively cooled card (manufacturer, model) should I buy when I want a newer Radeon with Dual output [Dual DVI would be cool, but I guess that's not available with Radeons]? (when the card is available at www.computeruniverse.net it would be even better since I will order sth. within the next 2 weeks).

Thank you for reading this stuff and perhaps even answering.

M

Thank you for your answers.

The URL helped me very much! Now I ordered an old 9500PRO with an "universal" connector and a huge passive cooler. Quite tricky to find such a thing. That should work I hope :-) I will report back if I will get it to work.

Thanks again,
M

DON'T get a radeon 9600, those will not fit physically into your pegasos board,
since they don't support the voltage used by our agp clot. The radeon upto
9200 are ok, as are the radeon 9500 (not 9550), 9700 and 9800.

I personally got a radeon 9800 Pro AIW from alternate for 134 Euros, and
altough i didn't test yet the 3D stuff (you need X.org 6.9/7.0, which should
also support TV out), all the rest should be supported already, including the
RF remote control and the tuner.

I think now is the moment to get radeon 9800 Pro, before they indeed become extint, as they will work nicely, are the most toplevel of the R300 family, are known to work well on the pegasos, and are available at really affordable prices (compared to the 400+ they used to ship at).

Sven Luther

Thank you for the warning. Using the URL at ATI I also figured it out and am happy to have asked here before :-).

I will try the 9500 Pro. I can't imagine that the difference would be that much. Or will it? I thought the CPU should also get on its limit.

Just tried xorg-6.8.99.15. This release has issues with the radeon driver on PPC and won't start. So you can save your computing cycles until the next release comes (they said it is solved in CVS).

Perhaps we two should then compare our fps in some nice 3D game when I get my 9500 to work and xorg plays nicely. I can use a passively cooled card everywhere - so upgrading to a 9800 would be possible if it's worth it. :-D

The best test is to look at the card, and see if it has the right set of
notches. the one which interest us have usually both notches, while the one
which don't work, like the 9600, has one notch only. (Well, there are 3.3V
only with the notch only on the other said, but i doubt you can buy these new
these days. My Appian Graphics Jeronimo 2000 card is one of those, but it is
well over 5 years old now.

Ok, i was actually waiting for the release which should happen not so far
away, maybe in sync with the gnome release, not sure.

The ATI page lists the 9800 as not being 3.3V compatible, which must be incorrect.

Oh, another proud Radeon9800Pro AIW owner - I love my Hercules card
and it was only 199EUR from Amazon >1 1/2 years ago, 256Bit RAM and all...
(ok, it was a patched SE version)

I can only second that!

I bought a Epox R9250 (it's rv280 and should be equal to 9200, it's actually reported as Radeon 9200 Pro in lspci) today, and it seems to work okay. I haven't had a working DRI since Debian changed to Xorg, but it's good to know this will be fixed in the future.

I was actually searching for a R9800 card, but they're all sold out here, so no luck with that. You can get actively cooled versions however.

I am intetested in purchasing a Pegasos and have been looking around at graphics cards.

I was wondering how well do the Mac versions of ATI's cards work on the Peg running Linux? Or should I just stick with the PC version?

You'll be fine with the PC version. IIRC, the Mac versions will not work in a Peg.

They kind of do (but you won't get any display until a Linux kernel capable of initialising it boots - they are totally untested on MorphOS).

We are not supporting them though. They cost twice as much, so who on earth would buy them?

The best graphic card working with MorphOS drivers on Pegasos II is the ATI RADEON 9250.

However, even if the following card are hardware compatible, they are not supported today on MorphOS (I don't know yet for Linux).
- ATI 9500 Pro (R300) - not sold any more
- ATI 9600 SE (RV350)
- ATI 9700 Pro (R300) - not sold any more
- ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition (R350) [not sure]

And the following are not hardware compatible :
- ATI 9550 : AGP 4X
- ATI 9600 : AGP 4X, 8X except in SE version.
- ATI 9800 / 9800 Pro / 9800 XT : AGP 4X,8X (But someone on this thread says it works... very strange because ATI says the opposite :
G: AGP 3.0 (4X/8X) graphics card in an AGP 3.3V (2X) slot (NOT SUPPORTED))

So it seems that the best possible card would be the ATI RADEON 9700Pro or maybe the ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition (not sure that it is hw compatible).
But... with the current drivers, today, the best is the ATI RADEON 9250 (which is the one I have ;-) ).

Note : my 9250 has dual output with DVI and 256MB RAM.
I works perfectly well on my Pegasos II, under MorphOS, Linux (Ubuntu, YDL, Debian...) and also MacOSX via MacOnLinux, or AROS (via X11).
Also note that this card is the one shipped with Pegasos ODW.

For hardware compatibility list, have a look a the Pegasos book ;-)

There are experimental Xorg drivers for R300-series cards. Development is coming along--slowly--and they do not work with the new EXA accel method.

What do you get on glxgears and which Xorg version are you using?

I guess you mean the one with the highest model number and availability, not really "the best".
My vote would go to the 9000Pro here.

>ATI 9800 / 9800 Pro / 9800 XT : AGP 4X,8X (But someone on this thread says it works...

If the card is 3.3V compatible with the AGP connector notch in the right place, it should work with Pegasos.

>it seems that the best possible card would be the ATI RADEON 9700Pro or maybe the ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition

Why Mac Edition and not PC Edition?

>Note : my 9250 has dual output with DVI and 256MB RAM.

Dual-DVI would be cool. :-)
The ATI FireGL Z1 based on a Radeon 9500Pro design would be such a card.

>Also note that this card is the one shipped with Pegasos ODW.

Can you confirm the card that ships with Pegasos ODW is a version with 128Bit memory?
