Hello,

I just found, that ATI 9500+ support is comming to Linux. The status report at http://r300.sourceforge.net/ looks pretty promising. Anyone tried it on a Pegasos?

I don't have an r300 board, but I've been keep on eye on this project for some time. This looks interesting though:
Code:
07/22/05 Latest version of Mesa and DRM drivers have been accepted in DRM and Mesa CVS trees on freedesktop.org CVS.
It looks like there will be something for you to try out in the next Xorg 6.8.99 (which runs perfectly on the Peg2).

A stupid question perhaps, but I want to learn ;-)

I don't know if there is an X800 or. sth similar for AGP, but if yes, will this work in the Pegasos? I mean, are all those new cards fully downwards compatible?

AFAIK AGP is just PCI on steroids ;-), the AGP slot in the Peg2 is even only physically an AGP slot. So are modern cards usable in it? Aaaand, do they make sense? Isn't the bus too slow for them?

thanks

Any 3.3V AGP card will work. That is the trick; it needs to be THREE POINT THREE VOLT operation or it simply won't physically fit. The last AGP cards that ATI made in this manner are the 9600 and 9800 (the 9500, 9700, X series are all 1.5V only cards).

Some OEMs don't ship the 9600 or 9800 in 3.3V capable designs either. You have to be very careful.

There is no issue with speed. There are plenty of benchmarks on the internet that show high performance 3D graphics running at barely appreciable performance hits using PCI or "fake AGP", compared to AGP 8x. It is certainly not "8 times slower" as well coded applications use the bus to a minimum anyway.

But is there anyone, who actually tried it? I don't have it (yet), and don't want to buy it until someone confirms, that it works.

I mean a better video card. A Radeon 9800 seems to be the fastest available card for a Pegasos (as far as I could understand from Neko's post), but it is quite expensive. So, I don't want to buy it just to see, that it works only as a 2D card.

I'll go out and buy a few of the supported cards today and let you know asap how good the support is.

May I ask if you had any success with the cards? Thank you very much.

thats a shame about the X series, i wonder if someone
will make a 3.3v AGP card sometime ?.

after reading this url below it seemed to me that given the people here and your contacts i wondered if the
"Secret Video Encoding Tool „ATI Avivo Xcode“ revealed" might be ported to peg ?.

i tryed a beta copy on my windows xp with a radion 9550 and to my amazement SOME of it actually worked there too, not to a great extent with the h264 encoding but works rather well for divx/xvid.

its not suposed to work at all so that was a nice suprise.

Encoding movies five times faster

By Arnt Kugler / November 2005

Avivo XCode: Top-secret power tool for ATI’s Radeon X1000 GPUs

CHIP Online had the opportunity to test a beta version of ATI’s still secret „Avivo XCode“ encoding tool. It uses the power of the GPU to reduce video encoding time –into virtually any format – drastically. Our results show: The new ATI solution easily does it 5 times faster than even the fastest CPUs available today! "

"Only new ATI graphics cards need apply

There’s a hook however: Avivo XCode only runs on PCs with ATIs Radeon X1000 series VGA cards; i.e. X1300, X1600, X1800 in their respective Pro or XT versions, as well as their All-in-Wonder version.
Our tests indicate that even the cheapest model, a Radeon X1300 available for around 90 Euros in Europe, can achieve dramatic speed increases at crunching down videos."

i wondered IF peg users were to get one of these
radeon X GPU's could bb or someone here ask about
using the great potential for video encoding
from linux if you can get the code for us.

it seems a rather amiga thing to have a usable co-processor This user programable GPU seems to kick arse/butt

would these GPU's even work as is (without the encoding part ? as everyone seems to advocate
the older 95** series ?.

I tried today a Radeon 9700 Pro and it works on Linux except 3D acceleration. I use Ubuntu 6.10 which has the latest xorg/dri/mesa onboard.

And I thought ATI has now Pegasos to make own drivers but the closed ATI drivers are only for x86. :-(

I have an R350 and it works fine with DRI. I'd suspect it's a configuration issue, but without more information (X.org logs, etc.) I can't tell you where you're going wrong. It does work pretty well though. :)
