Ubuntu 8.10 was released last week, so here come the network install and boot kernels for Pegasos and EFIKA. Before using any of these, please check the 'known problems' section.

Pegasos support is almost perfect, with just one major bug found until now, while EFIKA is a bit problematic...

Known problems:

Both: ext3 partitions created by the installer can't be read by the firmware. This means, that the boot kernel needs to be kept somewhere else (tftp, usb key, partition formated by earlier Linux releases, etc.)

EFIKA:
- xubuntu / XFCE is broken, applications don't start (works fine on Pegasos)
- xubuntu swaps 70+ MB just for starting an empty XFCE
- there is no sound support in kernel

Please let me know, if you need sound support for EFIKA, and then I'll try to fix it. Right now it only makes sense, if one uses 'mpd' (Music Player Daemon), a console music player controlled over the network, or something similar.

same problem with the current testing release of Debian. I had to create the partitions with MorphOS before installing anything on it.

Isn't there a rescue system on the Debian installer, like the one in Fedora and SuSE? You should be able to boot into a live filesystem and create partitions manually from the same media as you install the OS from.

It's still an extra step but if that is what is required, that is what is required.

Thanks! I'm writing this message on my fresh installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex PowerPC / PegasosPPC II G4 from Firefox 3.0.3 :D

Installation was OK, there are Java 6 (PowerPC), NetBeans 6.1 packages, so as work machine it seems great now!
From user perspective, I think it would be again slow system for me, but nothing is faster than MorphOS

On the Pegasos, I have yet to find another major problem. Only the partition bug is there, which can be worked around, if somebody formats partitions from SuSE (which has a bugfix), or from a command line using: parameter.

For the EFIKA I can only suggest to stay with an older release, if used as a desktop, as there is no sound, and even an empty desktop make the machine swap. On SuSE or Debian one can even start 1-2 apps without swapping...
