You should have a chat with Marcin Kurek, we had a bit of a ponder about why later kernels don't boot on the Pegasos I and came up with a few ideas of solutions (one of which worked at least to some degree :)

Your basic goal has to be to get past the firmware and into a working state after the Linux device tree is set up. Don't be too concerned about making it work with the firmware, just get PAST it and to something that boots :D

You can always patch up the tree to fix what drivers expect at some point (unfortunately this can't be done so well in the firmware from a Forth script, although some of it might be possible, on Pegasos I we have no way to automatically edit nvramrc like the scary way I'm engineering on Efika, and it'd be a very very big patch like the Efika script, which would not work around all the problems)..

mmh, i don't know peg1 and i was unable to find a manual. Today i've just played a bit (smartfirmware 0.1b114).

my impression.. plz, tell me if that's right.
1) it seems to be unable to boot from USB and cd.
2) it seems to be able to boot only from the first partition of a hdd or floppy partioned with AMIGA scheme and formatted with AFFS.

and obviously there isn't affs utils on linux.

You are correct. But it can boot MorphOS from CD.

What you need to do is boot MorphOS
and partition and format the boot-
partition with FFS.

I could only boot the Debian installer
file from Sven Luther. I placed that file
on the partition and booted up.

The Pegasos 1 is a very bad choice for
Linux-installations. The few who actually
worked ran Sven Luther's Debian-installer.

The Pegasos 1 is really only good for
MorphOS.

The Pegasos 2 has a much better version
of Smart Firmware and made Linux work
with no problems.

using affstools by R.Zippel (from a working cruxppc) i was able to prepare a boot partition.

but boot process freezes itself here:
unlucky machine...

does somebody here use a Peg1 with a modern kernel?

BTW
a cruxppc user, in past time, discovered this smartfirmware is able to read 'n boot from a FAT16 burned CD too. After that he used to add a second cd-rom drive with the only two files: kernel image and system.map.

Then it seems it's possible to change the boot partition in FAT filesystem removing the obsolete and deprecated AFFS one.

Hi all - please do!

In April I will go for a week to my old school in Belgium: KHK.

I will give some lectures there, but the core of my visit will be the project week; a week organized each year in which students develop a project in a rather short time. This year, it will focus on the EFIKA :-)

This is a direct result of the IWES6 Workshop we organized here in Vaasa.

We have a strong co-operation going, and this event will put the EFIKA and the 5200B in the hands of soon to be engineers who might not have known the 5200B before. We will be talking about embedded Linux, turning the EFIKA into an embedded server, create a webradio server, stream video to monitor industrial processes, etc.

It would be great if some of you could support this event and others with hardware you don't use/need anymore.EFIKA's would be great, maybe some would be willing to donate an Open Client?
