My name is Mark Cheethem, I just installed debian for the first time today and I am currently running gnome. Iv'e never used any kind of linux before.

Iv'e suffered a few problems so far but I have been able to sort them out except this one it baffles me.

Basically I have a Cornerstone p1500 21" montitor which has a max res of 1600x1200@85hz.

But when this resloution is displayed I get an out of range error on my monitor. I can run this reslolution in morphos and on my pc/winxp on the same monitor (via a kvm switch).

Iv'e found my /etc/x11/x86config-4 file and checked and double checked and then checked again all the relevent values and all match the specifications of my montitor. Which are:-

Max refresh 1600x1200@85hz

31-107 kHz horizontal scan

Hello,
are you sure that 1200x1600 is the correct resolution for your monitor, and is that what you have configured X11 to use? 1600x1200 is a standard monitor resolution, but 1200x1600 implies you have rotated your monitor 90 degrees, and in that case you should still configure it to 1600x1200 and then use the RandR extension to perform the rotation for you.

That's a silly little typo by me, the correct resloution is 1600x1200@85hz sorry about that. I got bit bit mixed up there, it is the correct way around in xf86config-4 though.

But, anyway I run the same screenmode in both MorphOS and on my PC on the same monitor (using a kvm switch) so I can't understand why it does not work under linux

I suggest that you check /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see what happens to the 1600x1200 resolutions when you start X11. Also make sure there are no warnings (WW) or errors (EE) related to your sync values or resolutions, if there are they might give an indication to what might be wrong.
