Post subject:  [News] Debian Squeeze on EfikaMX

Hello all,

I am implicated into bring Debian to EfikaMX. Some donations happened and were announced on Debian mailing lists [1].

* Debian-Edu people have been working in getting network boot for LTSP project. http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/LTSPArm

* Debian-Embedded people want to add multistrap http://wiki.debian.org/Multistrap support for efikamx, they also provide cross toolchains usable to build sources for efikamx userland and a reduced footprint Debian userspace (Grip http://emdebian.org/grip). Some notes on EfikaMX are collected in the wiki page. http://wiki.debian.org/EfikaMX

* Debian-Live people is aiming to provide ARM live images, but not just yet.

* Debian-Kernel, in order to hit Debian kernel, it needs to first get into mainline, so some effort is being carried out, mainly thanks to Amit Kucheria.

* Debian Qt/KDE

* Debian Installer

* Debian ARM hardfloat port is mainly driven by Konstantinos, which you already know about it. He is currently working with debian-ports infrastructure to get armhf port to a sane point were it might be useful for Debian Developers/Users.

https://wiki.debian.org/ArmHardFloatPort

I hope some other Debian contributors can post soon on their activities.

Best regards and enjoy,

indeed, today in the above url i documented the steps necessary to build a Debian LTSP chroot (using qemu), an initramfs using initramfs-tools, write out the kernel and initramfs to the SD card, and configure u-boot to boot it to a Debian LTSP environment.

earlier, i also worked on some hooks for initramfs-tools to load a kernel and initramfs using kexec. this is to work around limitations with the usb network card, which u-boot cannot boot from directly. so you can build a kernel/initramfs that then loads a kernel/initramfs off the network; this avoids having to write to the SD for every single kernel update.
http://people.debian.org/~vagrant/efika ... mfs-tools/

i did have a chance to borrow an HDMI capable monitor/TV to test that the GUI works, and it fired up LDM (the LTSP Display Manager) and logged in. remote audio and local devices worked. quite a capable, low power consumption thin-client!

live well,
vagrant

Post subject:  dealer in Europe?

Hi, I've been working together with Vagrant on the LTSPArm page for Debian Edu and am also involved in several rather large Debian Edu deployments in schools in Europe.

Both the smarttop box as well as the netbook (appearantly - I've also touched the former :) are great computers for schools as well as for the pupils using them! But for getting them into (most) European schools am European dealer is needed - do you have any plans for that? (Or did I miss some info..)

Thanks for supporting free software, "btw"!

cheers,
Holger

Hi Holger, thanks for posting. André Siegel is the new General Manager of Genesi Europe. This new company is based near Leipzig. André will be in contact with you. André has been managing www.power2people.org for many years.

We are solving the distribution problem and many thousands of units will be available in Europe next week.

Let's get things moving! There are many schools in many places that need the energy efficient, low cost, open source software based Efika MX products.

We appreciate the support of the Debian Community. Thank you.

R&B :)

Finally, there will be no problems with the purchase of Efika MX in Europe and Poland;)

Post subject:  armhf not working with qemu

this isn't hugely surprising, but i tested building Debian LTSP using armhf, and not surprisingly, the cross-architecture support doesn't work fully. it gets as far as debootstrap extracting, and then bails. i was able to actually chroot to the resulting directory, though.

seems like a similar problem to:

http://bugs.debian.org/562887

probably some unimplemented syscalls for armhf in qemu.
