Debian is just somehow more efficient even on x86. E.g. on my virtual(web)server i first used to run suse and experienced it going over the guarantied memory assigned to it. Luckily not over the max limit. Now i run ubuntu server on it (debian-based) on it with the same software components and now the virtual server stays well below the guarantied memory limit.

I did notice with SUSE it always seemed to be using the full memory like it had some Vista style pre-cacheing or something going on.

I find Debian Lenny faster too.

Isn't OpenSUSE very bloated?

I remember the update manager which was
completely useless. A normal update could
take hours for 50-or-so updates.

This was about 1,5 years ago, I really
hope it has improved..

Oh, it was on a 4 GB C2D machine..

Then you ran most likely into release 10.1, which had a mono based package management framework. It was quickly replaced for 10.2 :)

OpenSUSE is pretty lean if you install it as a server. As a desktop.. it likes to put in everything anyone will ever need by default, and makes some fairly odd.. server-related decisions like the bulk of the mailer daemon and started services being pointless for a desktop user.

Maybe anybody have recompiled Lenny's kernel for Pegasos with affs support? Put it here, please

Someone should be porting AFFS and SFS support to FUSE so we can stop having to rely on distribution kernel builds to support MorphOS and AROS... also, the ability to format a disk as those filesystems is sorely missing from the kernel drivers and tools. This needs to be addressed.

I think we should throw it up as a bounty on power2PEOPLE but I wonder if anyone will pay money for it or even pick up the challenge. I got no response last time I asked..

Has anyone had any success in installing anything more modern than Lenny on a Peg2?
